Barbara Miller Movies

A ten-time Emmy nominee whose casting choices were essential to the success of such television classics as ER, Friends, The West Wing, Knotts Landing, and Dallas, casting director Barbara Miller's contributions to television and film made stars out of numerous actors and her eye for spotting capable comic talent was virtually unrivaled. Getting her start on television with work as a musical director on The Edge of Night and casting work on The Dutchess and the Dirtwater Fox, it wasn't long before Miller was rising through the ranks to find stars for some of the most well known television shows of the 1980s. In addition to becoming the recipient of the CSA's Hoyt Bowers Lifetime Achievement Award, she also won multiple Artios awards from the Casting Society of America. Clearly inspired by such wall-to-wall action flicks as The Fast and the Furious and XXX, the endearingly mindless TV series Fastlane chronicled the adventures of two tough, hard-driving undercover L.A. cops. Answerable only to their leather-clad superior Billie Chambers (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen), officers Van Ray (Peter Facinelli) and Deaqon Hayes (Bill Bellamy) -- the latter was the brother of the former's murdered partner -- made mincemeat of a variety of nasty urban villains. This the heroes were able to do because they had full access to Billie's "Candy Store," a warehouse full of seized stolen goods, ranging from souped-up cars to state-of-the-art weaponry to hyper-sophisticated computer technology. The series was cocreated by McG, the former music-video director who'd helmed the 2001 theatrical feature Charlie's Angels. Played out larger than life and with tongue firmly in cheek, Fastlane proved to be everyone's favorite "guilty pleasure" when the series debuted on September 18, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The close bond between a single mother and her teenage daughter is often tested in this dramatic television series. Lorelai also has to contend with her own parents, who still believe they know what's best for both Lorelai and Rory. Created as part of an initiative to bring more family-friendly drama to American television, Gilmore Girls debuted on the WB network on October 5, 2000; singer/songwriter Sam Phillips contributed music to the series. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
