The gruff, adamantium-clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine strikes out on his own in this X-Men spin-off starring series regular Hugh Jackman. The story gets under way as the boy who will become Wolverine makes a shocking discovery about his family bloodline, and gains a brother in the process. Flash forward to find the mutant siblings battling side by side through two world wars and Vietnam -- where they are sentenced to death for killing a commanding officer -- and Logan (Hugh Jackman) and his brother, Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth, played by Liev Schreiber), have joined a top-secret government task force. When their targets begin to include innocent civilians, conscientious Logan escapes to the Canadian Rockies, where he builds a home with pretty schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins). Informed by his old commanding officer William Stryker (Danny Huston) that the members of his old team are being targeted for death, Logan is heartbroken when Victor finds and kills Kayla. Vowing revenge, Logan agrees to take part in a dangerous experiment that will fuse his bones with a powerful metal alloy called adamantium, which makes him virtually indestructible and gives him the strength needed to defeat his powerful brother. Subsequently betrayed by Stryker, Logan (now Wolverine) sets out to find his blood-lusting brother and stop the cycle of violence once and for all. Along the way, the temperamental hero is joined by fellow mutants John Wraith (Will.i.Am) and Remy LeBeau (aka Gambit, played by Taylor Kitsch). A family is touched by the shadows of hatred and violence in this Australian drama adapted from a short story by Raymond Carver. Stewart (Gabriel Byrne) and Claire (Laura Linney) are a married couple in their early fourties; Stewart runs a gas station while Claire looks after their son, Tom (Sean Rees-Wemyss). Tom has been grounded for the weekend after killing a small animal with his friend Caylin (Eva Lazzaro), and Claire keeps an eye on him while Stewart goes off on a fishing trip with his pals Carl (John Howard), Rocco (Stelios Yiakmis), and Billy (Simon Stone). After arriving at their favorite fishing spot, Stewart finds the naked body of a woman floating down the river; unbeknownst to him, Gregory (Chris Haywood), an elderly man riddled with racial hatred, killed Susan (Tatea Reilly), a young woman of Aboriginal heritage, and dumped her body in the water. Believing they wouldn't be able to drive to town to report finding the body and get back to make camp before nightfall, Stewart decides to wait until morning to contact the police, and ties a line to the corpse so it won't float away. The next morning, Stewart and his friends decide not to spoil their trip and spend the day fishing; they don't contact the police until after they return home on Monday. Stewart's callous actions cast an ugly light on himself, his friends, and his family, and Claire finds herself implicated in the crime through Stewart's poor judgment. Australian director Bill Bennett sets this exploration of sexual politics and cultural differences against the stunning vistas of the Trobriand Islands. In it, two anthropologists travel to a remote island in the South Pacific to study its culture in the 1930s. Evelyn (Maya Stange) is an adventurous free thinker, while her husband Phillip (Martin Donovan) is a rigid scholar bound to convention and propriety. Tension develops between the couple when Phillip fails to acknowledge what Evelyn sees as obvious: that women run this lusty culture. Tensions are upped another notch when Evelyn falls for Mick (Rufus Sewell), a macho American pearl merchant. As Evelyn's life begins to crash in around her, the Japanese army invades her island paradise and tragedy strikes her priggish husband. Since the breakup of his marriage, Billy Apples (Max Cullen), the stocky, middle-aged owner of a hardware store in Sydney, Australia, hasn't had much going on in his life. Billy has one hobby, singing with a jazz band in a club in his neighborhood; he knows that he's not much of a vocalist and that his teenage daughter Casey (Rachael Coopes) considers him an embarrassment, especially since she's convinced that he's to blame for her parents' divorce. But late one night, Billy sees several comets dotting the night sky, and something miraculous occurs -- suddenly, Billy is capable of singing like Billie Holiday! While many people are puzzled by this development (Billy himself is near the top of the list), his new sound packs them in at the club, and soon Billy's career as a singer takes off and he signs a recording contract. His ex-wife even suggests that she might give their marriage another try, but success goes to Billy's head and he becomes difficult to get along with; then Billy's voice starts to change back, prior to his appearance in a major music contest. In this humorous Western, Aussie Paul Hogan plays a cowboy running from the law. Lightning Jack Kane is a member of the notorious Younger Brother gang. He is the only member to survive their last shoot-out. Fortunately, he was only a minor member of the gang and escapes notice. Jack decides to rob a bank. He gets away with a small amount of cash and a mute, Ben, as a hostage. Unfortunately for Jack, Ben wants to be an outlaw so Jack is stuck with him. We usually assume that a Shotgun Wedding involves one each angry father, unwilling groom, and a compromised (usually pregnant) bride. However, although the bride is pregnant, in this Australian movie, the shotgun is being wielded by a couple of crooked policeman who are angry that a young convict has put the finger on one of them. Julia, Gunther, and Mary Lou are sharing a house together in Sydney, not far from downtown. The have advertised for another tenant, since it will lower everyone's housing costs. The man they choose is a gent named Bernard, personable and agreeable, who seems to be romantically interested in Julia. Meanwhile, Sydney has been undergoing a wave of bombings of government buildings and offices. Before long, Bernard's new roommates begin to wonder about him, but by the time they get seriously interested in what he's up to, he has taken steps to see to it that they don't hinder his activities. Alan (Phillip Gordon) has a family law practice and a family of his own. One day the whole setup seems impossibly claustrophobic to him, so he abandons everything and wanders around away from town until a ruined old mansion house in the country catches his eye, and he rents it. While there, he has incredibly erotic dreams of being in the arms of a lovely woman who died in the mansion a hundred years earlier. Intrigued at this encounter with the past, he enlists the help of two local men to help him research what happened to the girl. One of the men is a very non-traditional priest (Max Cullen), the other is simply someone from the area (Jim Moriarty). "Luigi" (David Rappaport) is a Cockney immigrant to Australia, whose job as maitre d' in a high-toned Italian restaurant requires that he take on an ethnic monniker and phony accent. Over time, he has become the confidante of a trio of his customer, yuppie women, all of them friends with each other, who have just lost substantial amounts of money during a sudden drop in the stock market in 1987. Horror and hard-rock meet head on in Encounter at Raven's Gate. On the eve of hosting a music concert, a tiny Australian town is plagued by a series of unexplained occurrences. Most of these involve electric appliances and the failure of same. Far more disturbing is the suddenly violent behavior of many of the citizens. This film about Stanley (Peter Bensley), a young man clashing with the real world around him, loses its potential for energetic farce and social comedy as many of the scenes are not convincingly delivered - or miss altogether. Stanley's father is a billionaire who is driven to distraction by his eccentric son and as a remedy for the young man's erratic behavior, he proposes brain surgery. Stanley is not eccentric enough to agree with that idea, and runs away to safety in the home of a normal family, or so he thinks. The "normal" father is actually gay but is still deeply ensconced in the closet as far as his family is concerned, the mother is having a hetero affair, the son is a drug dealer, and the daughter is expecting a racially-mixed child.
