Eric Schaeffer Movies
Filmmaker
Eric Schaeffer grew up and attended prep school in New York's Upper West Side. He studied Drama at Bard College and drove a cab to support himself while writing screenplays. He writes, directs, produces, and stars in his own films, which are frequently semiautobiographical comedies set in his old neighborhood. He made his debut feature, the semiautobiographical comedy
My Life's in Turnaround, along with fellow actor/writer/director Donal Lardner Ward. The team also created the semiautobiographical TV series New York Daze, which ran for one season on FOX. With the help of producer
Terence Michael, his next two films were romantic comedies in which he also starred:
If Lucy Fell, opposite
Sarah Jessica Parker, and
Fall, opposite
Amanda De Cadenet. After meager theatrical releases,
Schaeffer went back to TV to star as Marty Gorelick on the sitcom
Everything's Relative. He moved to sex comedies for his 1999 film
Wirey Spindell, again casting himself in the title role. He made another romantic comedy in 2001 with
Never Again, a love story between his
Everything's Relative co-stars
Jill Clayburgh and
Jeffrey Tambor. Back on television, he appeared on the Americanized twentysomething lawyer show First Years, which ran for one month on NBC. Another acting/writing/directing project, Mind the Gap, was released in 2004. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Actor/writer/director/producer Eric Schaeffer follows-up his 1997 romantic drama Fall with this sequel set 15 years later, as successful novelist Michael Shiver (Schaeffer) wrestles with the growing fear that his creative well has run dry after just one book, and flees to Paris in search of inspiration. Settling in a room in the Montmartre district courtesy of his good friend Charles (Christian Mulot), Michael wanders into a local shop and crosses paths with Sophie (Lizzie Brocheré), a lonely yet self-assured hospice nurse currently caring for a cancer-stricken teen named Anaïs (Marie Luneau). Much like Michael, Sophie has had her fair share of heartache. And though at first Sophie is somewhat aloof, long conversations with Michael concerning the intense emotional demands of her job find the pair gradually developing a deep romantic bond. They both value honesty in a relationship above all else, yet meanwhile Sophie takes great pains not to reveal that she moonlights as a dominatrix to a very wealthy clientele. Later, when Sophie attempts to tactfully breach the subject by asking if Michael has ever dabbled in BDSM, his uninterested response only reinforces her decision to keep that sordid aspect of her life hidden. Meanwhile, Michael has been keeping a secret as well -- a fact that could spell the end of their whirlwind romance when both buried truths are finally revealed. After Fall, Winter is the second installment in an ambitious planned series of four films -- each set 15 years apart -- detailing the ongoing romantic struggles of a man striving to experience genuine intimacy. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In keeping with its policy of serving up TV fare unlike anything else ever seen on any other network, cable or otherwise, the FX network unveiled Starved, the world's first sitcom about eating disorders, on August 4, 2005. The series was created by Eric Schaeffer, a seasoned TV writer and real-life anorexic. Schaeffer cast himself as Sam, a commodities broker suffering not only from anorexia but also compulsive-eating syndrome (his addiction to chocolate had reached ridiculously monumental dimensions), who regularly attended meetings of an eating-disorder support group, the Belttighteners. The remaining cast members likewise carried over their genuine eating problems to the characters they portrayed: Laura Benanti was Billie, an anorexic-bulimic, bisexual aspiring singer, whom Sam alternately despised and adored; Sterling K. Brown was Adam, a NYPD cop whose chronic bulimia had led him to commit minor crimes to feed his ailment; and Del Pentecost was Dan, a writer and overeater who always managed to find an excuse to put off his much-needed gastric bypass surgery. In the tradition of Seinfeld, the four main characters were not terribly likeable or admirable, but all were eminently watchable. Although Starved was positively reviewed in most trade papers, it did not meet with the approval of the National Eating Disorders Association, who disdained the show as "no laughing matter." Ironically sponsored by several prominent fast-food chains, Starved first aired in tandem with another cutting-edge FX sitcom, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A handful of New Yorkers with little in common cross one another's paths as they try to sort out their romantic and emotional troubles in this comedy drama from writer and director Eric Schaeffer. Sam Blue (Eric Schaeffer) is a single father who is raising a ten-year-old son, Rocky (Christopher Kovaleski), on his own. Rocky was conceived using an egg Sam purchased on the Internet; after being left at the altar by his fiancée, Sam isn't sure he can stand the pain of another romance, though Rocky wishes he could have a mom. Herb Schweitzer (Alan King) is an elderly man with a sour personality who has pledged to honor the memory of a deceased friend by walking from his apartment to a beach in Manhattan. However, the trip will cover many miles, and these days Herb can barely shuffle to the end of the block. Jody Buller (Jill Sobule) is an eccentric street musician who was given a pacemaker for her weak heart as a child. Jody is convinced this means a broken heart would be fatal, despite her doctor's efforts to convince her otherwise. Malissa Zubach (Elizabeth Reaser) is a young woman who dreams of traveling to other lands, but is stuck in a trailer home caring for her dying mother. Hoping to get a sense of the outside world, Malissa persuades pen pals across the globe to record audio tapes in public places so she can hear the places she wants to see. And John McCabe (Charles Parnell) is a man still struggling to come to terms with the collapse of his marriage, brought on by his own infidelity. Mind the Gap received its world premiere at the 2003 South by Southwest Film Festival, where it received the Special Jury Award for Narrative Feature. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Two singles in their early fifties who are convinced love has passed them by find each other -- and then try to figure out what to do next -- in this romantic comedy. Grace Minor (Jill Clayburgh) is a social worker whose personal life has hit the skids. Prompted by her friends Natasha (Sandy Duncan) and Elaine (Caroline Aaron), Grace takes the plunge and sets up a meeting with a man she's found through an Internet dating service. The date is a complete disaster, and Grace, deciding she needs a stiff drink, dashes into the first watering hole she finds. Grace finds herself in a gay bar, where she meets Christopher Roland (Jeffrey Tambor), a full-time exterminator and part-time jazz musician who, after an unsatisfying relationship with a younger woman and a surprising erotic dream, thinks he might be turning gay. Christopher and Grace strike up a conversation and quickly discover they have a great deal in common. They begin dating, but both have been through enough bad relationships in the past that they are determined not to get too serious about this one, even after they discover they get along extremely well in bed. Never Again also features Michael McKean as a cheerful transvestite prostitute and Bill Duke as one of Christopher's bandmates. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The debut project from co-star Michael Douglas' production company Further Films, this comic crime caper uses the narrative devices of multiple points of view and flashbacks, à la Rashomon (1951) and that classic film's many imitators. A late-night slaying at a bar called McCool's is the point of departure as Detective Dehling (John Goodman), bartender Randy (Matt Dillon), and Randy's lawyer-cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) project their fantasies onto the sexy Jewel (Liv Tyler), whose boyfriend (Andrew Dice Clay) is the corpse in question. As each man spills his guts -- Dehling to his priest, Randy to an aging hit man (Douglas), and Carl to his therapist (Reba McEntire) -- it becomes clear that the femme fatale Jewel has been manipulating the smitten men for her own purposes, namely a house full of cutting-edge electronic gadgets. One Night at McCool's is the debut American film from Norwegian commercial and music video director Harald Zwart. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

In this romantic comedy drama, a mismatched couple (who aren't as mismatched as they believe) are brought together by fate and have to decide if they should stay together. Sarah (Amanda DeCadenet) leads a charmed life: She's a supermodel widely regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world, she's a multimillionaire, and she's married to a wealthy European aristocrat, Phillippe (Rudolph Martin), whom she loves deeply. So when Sarah hails a cab and the driver, Michael (Eric Schaeffer), tries to pick her up, it's no surprise that she's not interested. But fate keeps bringing Sarah and Michael together over the next few days, and eventually the witty and charming cabbie wears down her resistance. They end up back at Michael's apartment after sharing dinner together, and before long, the two are engaged in an extended and highly passionate lovemaking session. It turns out that not all is as it seems; Phillippe has lost interest in Sarah, sexually despite her love for him, and Michael is not just a cab driver, but a once-wealthy and famous author who chose to retreat from the limelight. Racked with guilt the next morning over her infidelity, Sarah tries to convince Michael that they should remain friends and nothing more, while he is convinced that he's met the love of his life. Eric Schaeffer wrote, produced, and directed Fall, as well as played Michael. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This vanity project from writer, director, and star Eric Schaeffer is a romantic comedy about a pair of New Yorkers with a suicide pact. Joe MacGonaughgill (Schaeffer) is a painter and teacher who has been spying for years on Jane (Elle Macpherson), the gorgeous woman who lives across the alley, where she can be secretly observed undressing. Joe lives with Lucy Ackerman (Sarah Jessica Parker), a psychotherapist who's also his best friend. Suffering from her own relationship troubles with her boyfriend Dick (William Sage), Lucy is reminded of a long-ago pact she made with Joe: if neither is involved in a serious relationship by her rapidly approaching 30th birthday, they will commit suicide by jumping together off the Brooklyn Bridge. Then Jane comes to a show of Joe's artwork and he musters up the courage to ask her out, while Lucy begins dating Bwick Elias (Ben Stiller), an oddball artist who paints with his body parts. Only after Jane and Bwick turn out to be major disappointments do Joe and Lucy realize that they're perfect together -- and not in the platonic sense. Struggling independent filmmaker Schaeffer convinced Parker to take the female lead in If Lucy Fell when she hailed the cab he was driving. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Eric Schaeffer and Donald Ward managed to scrape together 22,000 dollars to make this independent film about the making of an independent film. Schaeffer plays a New York City cabdriver (which he really was), while Ward co-stars as his roommate (which he really was). They have no money, no script, and admittedly not much talent, but they're determined to put a movie together about a couple of slightly overweight twentysomethings who are united by their "outsider" status. Talent agent Lisa Gerstein, the men's mutual friend, takes a maternal interest in their project. Along the way, they manage to charm genuine celebrities such as Phoebe Cates and Martha Plimpton into appearing in their film. (Cates really was cajoled into appearing when she stepped into Schaeffer's taxi!) My Life's in Turnaround debuted at the Seattle Film Festival, where it scored a hit (despite its misogynistic undertones) and earned Schaeffer and Ward a multimillion-dollar studio deal. Incidentally, the word "turnaround" is a Hollywood term referring to a movie project that has been in development so long that its chances of ever being produced are slim to none; detractors of Schaeffer and Ward (and there are many) tend to wish that this had been the fate of My Life's in Turnaround. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
