Ole Bornedal directs the drama I Am Dina, based on the novel by Herbjørg Wassmo. In Northern Norway during the 1860s, a little girl named Dina accidentally causes her mother's death. Overcome with grief, her father (Bjørn Floberg) refuses to raise her, leaving her in the care of the household servants. Dina grows up wild and unmanageable, with her only friend being the stable boy, Tomas (Hans Matheson). She summons her mother's ghost and develops a strange fascination with death as well as a passion for living. Family friend Jacob (Gérard Depardieu) encourages Dina's father to hire Lorch (Søren Sætter-Lassen), a tutor who introduces her to the cello. When Dina is old enough (played by Maria Bonnevie), she marries Jacob and moves to Reinsnes, a port he runs with his mother, Karen (Wenche Foss), and his stepsons Niels (Mads Mikkelsen) and Anders (Jørgen Langhelle). Niels doesn't like Dina's wild ways, or the fact that she has taken over accounting duties at Reinsnes. Dina's eccentric tendencies become even stronger, eventually leading Jacob into an accident of his own and bringing Tomas back into her life. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Accepted practices and new ideas face off against each other in this historical drama about a father, his daughter, and a mysterious stranger. In Northern Sweden in 1820, the widowed Dr. Selander (Rolf Lassgard) lives with his 20-year-old daughter Maria (Johanna Sallstrom), who has been blind for the past decade. One day, a Danish traveler named Meisner (Ole Lemmeke) appears in town, claiming to be an expert magnetist who can use his skills to heal the sick. While many in town are sure Meisner is a con artist, Selander welcomes him into his home. After spending time with Maria, Meisner discovers that her blindness is a psychological response to a traumatic event -- she was raped by Russian soldiers when her town was sacked ten years before. Maria's sight returns, and Meisner claims it was the result of his skills in magnetism. This leads to a blossoming romance between Meisner and Maria, much to the annoyance of Stenius (Gard B. Eidsvold), a partner of Selander who also had his eye on the girl. Impressive production design and fine performances highlight this international production. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The CIA discovers a stolen missile being routed through the Arctic by Russian rebels. Since they plan to smuggle it into Sweden, the Swedish secret service is called in. After Hamilton (Peter Stormare) and his men kill the smugglers, Hamilton realizes it was a set-up, since another missile went into Sweden. According to medieval legend, the "Tears of Saint Peter" is a strange elixir said to be able to heal and restore the dead to life. Using the concoction, Carla devises an ingenious plot to rob a wealthy mayor in this Swedish comedy-drama set in the late 15th century. Disguising herself as a man, whom she calls Carlo Marcellini, Carla wants to use the potion to bring back every townsman who has died over the previous ten years. Unfortunately, she falls in love with the mayor's son who makes her promise to also resurrect his beloved, late fiancee. This is a rather randy film and features medieval orgies and full-frontal male nudity. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Though there's no single word for it, the lead character in this offbeat comedy is an all-purpose worrier. He's not particularly paranoid, even though this nightclub owner has got some real enemies. He just worries a lot. He worries about his sex life with his stripper girlfriend. He worries about her sex life, since he's impotent. He worries about the man he persuaded her to start an affair with. He worries about getting caught for murdering the man, since he's jealous. He's worried about the enforcers for the loan shark he borrowed money from, and what they might do to him. In fact, if he could have his way, he'd have his family doctor perform a lobotomy, so he wouldn't have to worry so much. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This pseudo-documentary chronicles, in a high-flown anthropological manner, the preliminary preparations men and women in Denmark make before they make love, and the things they do afterwards. Subjects are shown shaving, putting on make-up, dressing carefully, etc., and then getting together and caressing one another. The sex act itself is omitted. Then the subjects are shown smoking, deciding to put on their clothes and then deciding not to (for another bout of lovemaking). All is presented in a dry, non-emotional style. Adding to the documentary flavor of this experimental film (part of a series by the director) is footage from the Trobriand Islands, an hommage to anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski's groundbreaking work earlier in the century. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The Swedish Andra Dansen, Viaggio al Nord (English title: The Last Dance) is a female "road" picture a la Thelma and Louise (which it preceded by nearly a decade). Lisa Hugoson stars as Anna, a prostitute; Kim Anderzon co-stars as Jo, an avant-garde musician. The two women find themselves travelling companions as they seek out new lives for themselves. Along the way, Anna and Jo come into contact with all sorts of eccentrics and at one point must fend off a potential rapist. This leisurely-paced "search for oneself" exercise received its largest viewership when it was presented at the World Film Festival in Montreal. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
