A cop convinces a friend on the wrong side of the law to trust him, only to see their lives endangered when someone else betrays that trust in this Dutch crime thriller. Eddy (Cas Jansen) is a police detective whose career seems stuck in neutral. Hoping for a promotion, he warily agrees to approach his old friend Jackie (Victor Low), a small-time hash dealer, and persuade him to act as an informant as the police try to put Haveman (Ton Kas), one of the nation's biggest dope wholesalers, behind bars. Jackie and his wife have just become parents, and Jackie thinks becoming a police informant might prevent him from doing serious time if he's ever busted, so he agrees to cooperate with Eddy under the condition that his status as an informer be kept a strict secret. But Eddy soon discovers that someone in the department has been leaking information about Jackie's secret testimony, which puts both Jackie and Eddy's lives in great danger. Lek was directed by Jean van de Velde, who enjoyed a pair of major box-office successes in the Netherlands with All Stars and De Kleine Blonde Dood. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

It seems that misdeeds by inhabitants of the Dutch provinces make for believable stories, whether they are mysteries by Willem van de Wettering, or psychological thrillers by Simon Vestdijk, who wrote the book this film is based on. In the story, set in the 1950s, Hendrik Grond (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) has a good law practice, and a happy marriage which has produced a son. He is so contented that his world is completely shattered when, undetected, he catches his wife in bed with his law firm's senior partner. In fact, he has become quietly unhinged, and he arranges a series of "accidents" to ensure his revenge - becoming involved in the local underworld in the process. Will he succeed in committing a series of "perfect" crimes, or will the police inspector (Johan Simons) investigating these incidents get wise? ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Though it is hardly the reputation the Netherlands has around the world, this small nation has significant numbers of very dedicated religious believers, and many of them are to be found in small towns or on islands away from the big cities. In this story, one such group dominates life on an island off the coast from Rotterdam. In the story, a group of adolescents have grown up together in this wholesomely close-knit, if slightly repressed, community. They even remain friends after they discover the joys and terrors of sex. Each of them goes on to adult occupations. One becomes an accomplished musician, and another, the preacher's son, comes back to the island as an important reporter. While he is there a horrible murder takes place, and he becomes involved in the investigations that follow. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
