This Brazilian film by auteur Carlos Reichenbach offers a lush, at times surreal, collage that pays tribute to the arts and presents his personal experiences and political insights as it examines the youthful memories of two close friends. Torres and Xavier are old friends who have recently published a volume of poetry. Their celebration in a rundown pastry bar becomes the framework for their reminiscences. The story frequently jumps from past to present. Their friendship began in 1957. They next remember the 60's where they discovered loving and shared a passion for movies. In the present, Anesia, a prostitute arrives and causes Torres to remember the time her pimp forced him to play her date as she visited her parents. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Every country no doubt has its golden youths who die before they have had a chance to come to full flower and who leave a romantic legend behind them. In the U.S., one of these was James Dean. In Brazil, the fans of the actress Leila Diniz were similarly bereft when she died in the late 1960s. This biographical drama, directed and written by one of her close friends, and produced by a relative, tells the story of a very modern woman who broke new social ground in the conservative society of Brazil. Many of the people involved with the unconventional actress in real life play themselves in this film. The mood of the times are evoked: it was an era when a repressive military dictatorship governed the country, but the ideas and styles of beat poetry and aspirations for social change were fermenting among the young. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This semi-autobiographical comedy-drama is the second of a trilogy by director David Neves who takes a look at life on the wild (or at least casual) side in Rio de Janeiro. Bruno (Claudio Marzo) hangs out with a group of free-wheeling dilettantes with two guiding passions in life: doing nothing whenever possible, and sex. A porno filmmaker (Roberto Bonfim) focuses on the latter avocation, while Herminio (Flavio Sao Thiago) focuses on the former. While pursuing both of these passions, Bruno begins an affair with a widow in her 30s and everything seems to be going well -- until he sees her teen-age daughter (nicknamed Fulaninha by his buddies) and it's love at first sight. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
