Libina Mitevska stars as a mother in search of the daughter that was taken from her when the family was forced into an internment camp during the Bosnian conflict in director Christian Wagner's award-winning family drama. Thirty year-old Senada (Mitevska) is a successful real estate broker and accomplished volleyball player living in the Bosnia and Herzegovina village of Brcko. Though in the surface it would appear as if Senada has everything a woman could want in life, her family has been ripped apart by war and she is haunted by the memories of the daughter that was forcefully taken from her in one of Bosnia's darkest hours. Not only did her marriage to the kindly Samir (Senad Basic) crumble during the conflict that consumed the land, but her daughter Aida was taken from the pair by aid workers and spirited away to an undisclosed location. Convinced that she has located her daughter in the Ulm, Germany, Senada enlists the aid of a sympathetic trafficker named Dzigera (Zdenko Jelcic) in crossing the border and avoiding the radar of local aid worker Mrs. Jandrasko (Katrin Sass). Upon discovering that her daughter has been renamed and is currently being raised by a well-to-do German couple, the desperate mother watches from afar while planning to recover the unsuspecting adolescent who seems to have all but forgotten her turbulent past. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Imagine their distress when a long-lost daughter of the wealthy woman shows up on their doorstep. Since she is a poorly dressed woman who speaks no German, having grown up in the Balkans, they soon come to believe that they can probably con her into marrying the son. This will have the dual benefit of keeping them out of jail and will save them the inconvenience of having to kill her. A disturbing picture of a woefully dysfunctional family, this dark drama focuses on the sailor Maks (Boris Cavazza) and the people at home who either denigrate or ignore him. His sorry relatives include his invalid mother, an unbalanced sister who works as a hairdresser, and a son fanatic about boxing and women. Their attitudes may have contributed to Maks' drinking problem but his alcoholism is obviously making everything worse. For Maks, the only saving grace in his home life is a nephew who enjoys playing chess with him. As circumstances develop, the family situation only gets worse. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This three-part historical epic of the lives and misfortunes of the Vrhunc family in the former Yugoslavia is divided into the years of 1914, 1924, and 1944. Since the film is a down-sized version of a longer episodic television presentation, that may account for some possible confusion in the story. In 1914, the wealthy Vrhunc patriarch owns valuable land and operates a lucrative mine. He is conservative and wants to hold on to the status quo, and so when the region breaks away from Hapsburg rule, he loses out. His wife, in the meantime, is a tragic figure who has an unhappy solution to her stifling existence with her husband and children. In part II, set in 1924, the fascists and communists are fighting for footholds among the population and in the government, and the Vrhunc family is torn apart because their own allegiances are divided between the two opposing extremes. In part III, the family suffers the most, as Nazi collaborators are rounded up and shot by Partisans, and chaos reigns.
