This picaresque, melancholically-tinged German-language biopic from director Markus Rosenmüller dramatizes the colorful life-story of Mathias Kneissl, one of the most legendary bandits-turned-folk heroes in European history. The time and place in question: Bavaria at the turn of the 20th century. Born into a working-class family with the slimmest of prospects, Mathias has little choice but to turn to a life of crime. By the age of 17, he's involved in illegal poaching of game to enable the day-to-day survival of his family, assisted by his 15-year-old brother Alois and his beloved father. This, alas, ends on a heartbreaking note when gendarmes catch Herr Kneissl in the act and systematically beat him to death; in the process, Alois completely loses his patience, whips out a gun, and shoots one of the officers in the head, injuring him. Tragically, although Matthias had nothing to do with this action, he gets thrown behind bars as an accomplice along with his dear brother, and serves a six-year sentence. Upon release, Matthais makes a sincere and legitimate attempt to go straight - a desire abetted by his relationship with the lovely Mathilde, with whom he settles down. But in time, the officer with the head injury, Forsch, turns up once again, wracked by vengeance and driven by a desire to systematically ruin Mathias's life. In the end, Forsch's efforts prove so successful that Mathias has no choice but to turn back in the direction of crime. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

In this comedy, a little village which is so idyllic that, as one reviewer put it "even the cats and dogs are friends," is threatened with destruction, as plans are announced that it is slated to be demolished to make way for a new express train line. A tough black comedy that reaches into the absurd to bring its message across, this effort by director Josef Roedl is a true original. Jacob (Sigi Zimmerschied) comes from a small village in Bavaria that has disappeared, eaten up by a sprawling U.S. military base. When he gets a job with a greedy capitalist known only as the Boss (Peter Kern) he does not know it is a ruse; his new employer wants Jacob's aunt's house and land. The Boss hires Janis (Sunnyi Melles) to seduce Jacob into a trap that would force him to hand over his aunt's property (his aunt is in a mental institution and legally incapacitated). When he catches on to these plots, Jacob puts on Army fatigues and goes to live in an abandoned barn in his old village, which just happens to be smack dab on the military base's firing range. To Jacob, he is now in the U.S. and can launch attacks against the Boss. From this point onward, other characters come in and out of his barn, including Janis, who must decide whether or not she can take the dive bombers and artillery fire in order to stay with Jacob. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this low-budget satire, director and writer Rolf Gmöhling has raised the flaws in the society and economy of West Germany to the heights of absurdity. The story starts off with a man released from treatment for his bad nerves after 10 years in a clinic. He then moves from one impossible encounter to another in a world he does not recognize. At this point in time, the government is no longer functioning because the Chancellor did not receive a required 5% of the vote, and the president is off in foreign lands and has not been heard from in many months. No one really does his or her job and when the ex-patient goes to the empty unemployment office, it is hard for the clerk to believe that he wants to work. In fact, after he gets a job, he is asked to appear on television because he is unique. In the meantime, the broadcasters are faking an interview with a bogus Nobel Prize winner in order to fill air time. Unfortunately, the insanity weakens and dissipates at this point, cutting back on the effect of the film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this sometimes amusing view of post-war life in Germany from the perspective of little Marianne (Saskia Tyroller), "Mr. Peace" (Peter Fonda) is idolized because like other American soldiers, he is fast and loose with handing out chewing gum and peppermints to the children. When Marianne hears the village fire-and-brimstone preacher exhort the congregation about how sinners are doomed, she imagines all sorts of things that might befall "Mr. Peace." Marianne knows he has become attracted to the one woman in the village who has a reputation for being fast and loose with her favors. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This human drama that unfolds quite slowly, is the story of the village woman Agnes (Therese Affolter) and her gradual adjustment after the trauma of being raped when she was a little girl. Agnes has an admirer, Adi (Siegfried Zimmerschied) who lives on the next-door farm, and their families hope the two will one day marry. Although Adi has fallen in love with Agnes, she is indecisive about her own feelings for him and besides, she is plagued by nightmares that prevent her from having a normal relationship. Then one day her family's barn burns to the ground and a young boy who was infatuated with Agnes dies in the blaze. Since some villagers feel Agnes is "cursed," she eventually opts to leave the village and stay with a friend in a larger, nearby town. On arrival, she discovers her friend works at a cabaret-style brothel and for awhile Agnes is tempted to sleep with one of the womanizers in the town -- until Adi arrives and she changes her mind. Both Adi and Agnes return to the village, and indications are that there is some hope for their future together, some hope that the nightmares will end. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
