A beleaguered mother attempts to ensure that everything is perfect for her daughter's wedding despite the fact that their dysfunctional family is coming apart at the seams in writer/director François Dupeyron's darkly comic family drama. Christie Mousse is about to get married, and what she doesn't know is that her deadbeat dad recently gambled away the money that was intended to pay for the reception. As Christie's long-suffering mother Sonia dutifully reassures her daughter that the ceremony will go off without a hitch, the lawless exploits of her angry adolescent son Victor gradually threaten to cast a shadow over her daughter's picture perfect wedding. Recently, Sonia has been saving up money in hopes of purchasing the Laundromat where she currently works, though before the day is through she will be forced to contend with a development that threatens the livelihood of her entire family. While to most outsiders Paris seems the very picture of beauty and civility, France has had a long and unfortunate history of intolerance toward outsiders, and this powerful drama from filmmaker Mathieu Kassovitz takes an unblinking look at a racially diverse group of young people trapped in the Parisian economic and social underclass. Vinz (Vincent Cassel), who is Jewish, Hubert (Hubert Kounde), who is Black, and Said (Said Taghmaoui), who is Arabic, are young men from the lower rungs of the French economic ladder; they have no jobs, few prospects, and no productive way to spend their time. They hang out and wander the streets as a way of filling their days and are sometimes caught up in frequent skirmishes between the police and other disaffected youth. One day, a street riot breaks out after police seriously injure an Arab student; the three friends are arrested and questioned, and it is learned that a policeman lost a gun in the chaos. However, what they don't know is that Vinz picked it up and has it in his possession, and when Vinz, Hubert, and Said get into a scuffle with a group of racist skinheads, the circumstances seem poised for tragedy. This drama focuses upon the psychological adjustment problems of a young boy whose family moves him from Africa to Paris, France. Moctar, a boy whose first 11 years were spent in a small village in Mali, is having difficulty adjusting to his new life in Paris. After several years in Paris, Moctar suddenly sees a terrible hyena in the street. When Moctar tries to explain his vision, he becomes the laughingstock of his peers and a patient for the school psychologist. This follow-up to the 1986 hit comedy follows the pattern of most sequels by failing to live up to the original. In his search for a jacket containing a wining lottery ticket, a white policeman makes contact with African immigrants living in Paris. He is followed by a black journalist and a big black mamma who has fallen in love with the white man.
