This film by Doris Dorrie concerns two men who fight over one of their wives. Angelica (Sunny Mellis) is a fairly conventional housewife who is concerned about her marriage, because her husband Victor (Heiner Lauterbach) has been ignoring her. So Angelica calls in a remedy, her petite friend Lotte (Katharina Thalbach) to light some fire under Victor. Lotte has no problem in doing that, because she enjoys the result, but this time the fire turns into a conflagration that runs out of control. With Lotte taking off from the incendiary effects of her actions and Victor obsessed with chasing after her, Angelica's original problem is reversed, and now Lotte is suffering the consequences. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this slightly garbled mystery story, Anna (Birgit Doll) works in a Munich detective agency as an assistant to Sam Schwarz (Armin Müller-Stahl) -- an inept private investigator and aspiring author -- and one day she decides to unravel a missing persons case herself. She travels to the Brittany seacoast and settles into the abandoned cottage that had been occupied by the now-missing Maria. After a short while in the cottage, Anna begins to suspect someone malevolent is out to murder her, and she deteriorates emotionally, even contemplating suicide. A friendly neighbor helps her out more than once, but the mystery of Anna's response to the cottage and of the missing Maria is not resolved until Sam Schwarz arrives from Munich and starts working on both cases. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The German Seventeen and Anxious was also released as O Happy Day. The film's alternate title is a reference to a popular gospel song, which is performed often and con brio in the course of the action. The film's official title alludes to the coming of age experienced by its youthful protagonists. The younger actors are green but eager to please, while the veterans in the supporting cast-including Nadja Tiller and Karl Michael Vogler-help make the film palatable for those among us not politely inclined to nervous teenagers. The film's R rating is admittedly necessary, but should not suggest that the film is overtly offensive. Unfortunately, Seventeen and Anxious represents the next-to-last film effort for its talented director, Zbynek Brynych. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
