Adapted from Umberto Eco's best-selling novel, director Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Name of the Rose is a 14th century murder-mystery thriller starring Sean Connery as a Sherlock Holmes-esque Franciscan monk called William of Baskerville. When a murder occurs at a secluded Benedictine Abbey, William is called in to investigate. As he and his apprentice, Adson von Melk (Christian Slater), delve deeper and deeper into the case, more dead bodies begin to turn up. Eventually, Bernardo Gui, an inquisitor played by F. In this comedy about the triumph of the exploited against the powerful few, an affable and honest Bavarian truck driver is hoodwinked by a shifty salesman into buying seven different insurance policies. When the driver slowly realizes that the cost of the policies comes to about half of his salary - an impossible situation - he innocently goes to the company headquarters in Munich to right the "mistake" - only to find that a secretary is sending him on one wild goose chase after another. In his meanderings, he comes across a hidden system of cameras that have been spying on the workers on the sixth floor - where the secretary is located. So he lets her know what is going on, and in return, she tells him that the salesman he wants will be at a company party that evening - along with everyone else in the company as well. Mathias' parents have just divorced. His mother is a factory brigade-leader and his father is a journalist. Since he is now eight years old, he really wants to spend more time with his father than circumstances allow. He is not amused by the "uncles" who stay overnight with his mother. He runs away during a free school hour to see his father, and finds him entertaining an "aunt," which he finds displeasing as well. Chastened, his father tells him the story of Daedalus and Icarus. At the same time, he promises the boy an airplane ride over Berlin on his birthday. When his birthday comes, his father is nowhere to be found, and Mathias searches everywhere. When he gets home, he finds that his father has sent him a model train set and has either forgotten or disregarded his promise -- for it is never mentioned. A new "uncle" comes into his life at this time, and Mathias realizes that he can't depend too much on others to do what is important to him. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
