In this intellectually sophisticated children's story, young John (Jacob Katz) has been under a lot of pressure because his parents are divorced and his mother will not let his father come see him. So when John has a dream about Jesus -- who turns out to be an impoverished little girl, in this case -- he is bound to feel better. The girl-Jesus has her own way of coming into and out of the picture but teaches John that no one is all bad or all good. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In a light story of angels and human redemption, Arne Mortensen (Jesper Langberg) is an irascible, mean-spirited husband and father of two older children who runs a shoe factory with a heavy iron hand. One day he becomes insanely jealous of his children's love for their chauffeur (Paul Huttel), and with the chauffeur in the car with him, he crashes into a wall. The hitch is that Arne dies, the chauffeur lives -- but nasty Arne's soul is transferred to the chauffeur's body. A second hitch is that two angels in heaven have been charged with reforming one bad guy if they want to keep their heavenly status -- and Arne's soul is elected. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This feature-length Danish cartoon, the second in a trilogy that began with Trællene (1978) and concluded with Trællenes Børn (1980), tells three separate stories: "The Black Death," about arranged marriages in the shadow of the plague of 1349; "Rebellion and Deceit," the adventures of a young peasant boy in 1450; and, finally, "The Hangman's Daughter," a self-explanatory drama set in 1542. ~ Hans J. This important Danish film is a scathing satire on the Danish love for order and security, and was filmed by and for Danes. It is based on the humorous novel Den forsvundne fulmaergtig by old-line Marxist writer Hans Scherfig. In the story, two men go missing at the same time. One is a lawless drifter; the other is a clerk, with a wife and two children, who works for the Defense Department. The clerk discovers that the drifter has died and switches identities with him. His family is protected by his life insurance policy, so he is now free to do whatever pleases him. He tries rural life for a while, but when the police arrest him for a crime they believe the drifter committed, he is not unhappy. Indeed, so pleased is he with the orderliness of prison life that he confesses to the crime so as to be able to remain there. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
