It's election day in a small town in rural Czechoslovakia, and Helena (Theodora Remundova) is excited to be part of democracy in action. Unfortunately, she seems to be the only one who feels that way. Helena is helping to man the local polling station with her daughter Jana (Iva Janzurova), who is just home from college -- but Jana is a lot more concerned with her failing romance with one of her instructors than the outcome of the election. Meanwhile, Jenda (Leos Sucharipa), Helena's husband, is recovering from a stroke and wishes Helena could stay with him at home. As the few locals who can be bothered to vote stroll through, a bottle of booze materializes, and soon Helena and the rest of the staff are sharing their feelings on the onset of democracy in their nation. Enebene was the first dramatic feature for director Alice Nellis, who previously distinguished herself in documentaries. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The strains of Debussy's "Afternoon of a Faun" waft through this amusing comedy about an aging lecher's ever-optimistic pursuit of the fair sex, for fair sex, or better. The "faun" wakes up to a new day of happy hunting because the proof of the pudding is irrelevant, it is the joy of finding the ingredients that matters. Whether out on the streets or at his job in an office, he does not relent in his hopeful approaches to mainly young women, who mainly ignore him. No one is more aware of his skirt-chasing than an older companion in the same office who has loved him from the beginning. And the big question is, will the late-blooming Don Juan come to his senses? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

It is little wonder that this film was withheld from release by the communist government of Czechoslovakia from 1969 to its release in 1990 at the Berlin Film Festival. What's amazing is that it was made at all and that, having been made, it survived to be shown. The story concerns the irrepressible goodness of people imprisoned by the government in labor camps, as they struggle against all odds to retain their humanity. The story focuses on two small groups of prisoners: one of men, the other of women. They have been imprisoned for such apparently minor crimes as attempting to find out what has happened to missing loved ones. The two groups manage to interact and some romance even springs up between them. From time to time, prisoners are spirited away in a mysterious black car, never to be seen again. Reviewers were lavish in their praise of this film, which is funny, bitter, satirical, allegorical, and rich with imagery that is particularly meaningful to those who endured similar privations through living under repressive regimes. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
