Anthony LaPaglia, who's probably played more cops than Pat O'Brien, Edgar Kennedy and Fred Kelsey combined, dons brass and blue once more in The Custodian. LaPaglia plays a frustrated Australian policeman who decides to take on departmental corruption in a most unorthodox fashion. When he's not wrestling with bureaucracy and the good-ole-boy network, the policeman must contend with his unhappy marriage. All of the protagonist's various travails come to a head in the offbeat finale. The Custodian cannot be recommended for children, so pop it in your VCR after the little darlings are snuggled in bed. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The premise in this actioner (set in the 1990s, which probably seemed futuristic at this time) is that the world's economy has hit the skids and in Australia, street punks are looting cars for their spare parts. In order to control the mobs of roaming gangs, the Aussie government rounds them up and stashes them in prison camps. When Crabs (Ned Manning) takes his girlfriend Carmen (Natalie McCurry) out to a drive-in movie on a date he does not realize he has just pulled into one of these prisons. In no time at all his tires have been stolen and he sees that he's been trapped. The rest of the action (spliced with humor) involves Crabs fending for himself and trying to finds a way out. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this uneven children's story, Molly is a talented little dog who can sing for the people who love her -- but is mute when her vocals are required by the more cold-hearted of the human breed. Her new, young caretaker Maxie (Claudia Karvan) has her hands full because the villainous "Old Dan" Garry McDonald is after Molly's melodious talent for his own financial gain -- but then, maybe the circus troupe that has taken Molly and Maxie under their wing will be able to protect them both. Unfortunately, "Old Dan" is such a sinister, psychotic type that the intended sense of adventure in the film is often no more than a sense of the macabre. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Though this movie is based on an Australian TV series, The Box stands successfully on its own. In the movie, Channel-12 owner Sir Henry Usher (Fred Betts) has engaged the services of Dr. Winter (Cornelia Francis), an efficiency expert, in the forlorn hope of having the station turn a profit. When Dr. Winter arrives on the scene, she is confronted with the station's efforts to produce a hopelessly awful adventure drama, "Manhunt." Efforts on the part of station personnel to placate, appease and please this implacable (so they imagine) authority continually go awry. Inveterate schemers, the station's personnel manage to have as many romantic misadventures as they have job-related ones. Eventually, they get a clue, and things begin to look rosier for this madcap bunch. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
