Maniram (Mandar Singh) is good at cheating. As a smuggler, he's been cheating the government for years. What's more, he's been cheating his customers as well. These days, he's been letting his daughter Tejo (Mita Vashisht) take care of more and more of his business. He doesn't know it, but she's aware that he has been cheating her and the rest of the family as well, and she resents it deeply. Maniram's oldest son Dhani (Shatrughan Sinha) was just arrested for participating in a counterfeiting scam, and he is worried that the counterfeit bills he has will get him into trouble. In fact, he's in something of a panic. Tejo is not panicked, though. She knows just what to do to keep her father out of trouble and to get a share of the action for herself. This (Hindi) family crime drama is based on the novella In The Valley by Anton Chekhov. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this drama, three cranky old survivors of India's independence movement are headed by train from Bombay to Rajpur, to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the boarding school they all went to. As they travel, each neatly dissect how each of the others has made a failure of his life. Meanwhile, a serious political confrontation is taking place in Rajpur, which could disrupt the approaching celebration. As the old-timers observe the unfolding of these events, they recollect their own highly reproachable pasts when, in similar circumstances, they acted against their consciences. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This hard-hitting political drama was hit equally hard by Indian distributors and television, who declined to run the film. The controversial storyline features a newspaper editor who uncovers corruption, murder, and bribery in high office. When a politician is killed, an journalist discovers that a member of parliament had the man assassinated. What's more, the same member of parliament is an underworld gangster. As the editor digs deeper, the complicity of higher-placed politicians comes to the surface, which leads to riots in one town and an attempt to suppress his story. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The inhuman treatment of Untouchables or outcastes in one village in the Indian state of Bihar is the tragedy that fuels this devastating though occasionally flawed drama by Prakash Jha. The village is dictatorially run by a corrupt Brahman (the highest of the four major castes in India) who illegally maintains his control via rigged elections. When the Untouchables who work his land walk out in protest, he coolly orders them massacred and then torches their homes. Soon the police and a government minister arrive to investigate the disaster, but guess whose story they believe? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
