A Duke on a journey to meet with the Pope falls victim to identity theft after he is abducted by a gang of bandits in this period drama from director Bob Montero. On route to Rome the Duke is taken prisoner by bandit Duccio and his gang. Upon realizing the Duke's mission, Duccio makes way for Rome with the Duke's credentials and meets with Roman nobles and experiences a ravishing night of passion at Lucrecia Borgais' palace of the Masked Lady. A British-American production, Sweet William is an R-rated movie about sexual relationships that focuses on the flings of an untamed Scotsman named William (Sam Waterston). William has had two marriages and many affairs, and he approaches more romantic adventures without feeling any guilt. His next target is a sensitive and naïve London woman, Ann (Jenny Agutter). Her boyfriend is away on business in the U.S., and the irresistible William woos her by acting lovably loony. Ann soon learns of William's reputation, even though he does his best to hide his past and his current fancies. She decides that some woman finally needs to take a stand against William's charms. Ann eventually makes him choose between continuing his philandering ways and settling down for true happiness. Despite its theme and rating, the film has no explicit sexual scenes. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

This is not the same kind of film as the 1962 production, Tom Jones. In fact, it is a "nudie musical", as evidenced by the presence of singing star Georgia Brown in the dual role of Jenny Jones and Mrs. Waters. The project originated as a Las Vegas stage presentation, with Nicky Henson in the lead. The plot of the Henry Fielding novel about the "boy born to be hanged" is followed in spirit rather than to the letter, with busty Joan Collins thrown in like a lagniappe as a lady highwayman. Wandering through the proceedings are such English stalwarts as Trevor Howard and Terry-Thomas. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An institutionalized schizophrenic with a Messiah complex inherits the position of an English Earl in this cutting satire of British society, based on a play by Peter Barnes. The film's irreverent tone is established with the disturbingly hilarious death of the thirteenth Earl of Gurney during a bizarre attempt at auto-erotic asphyxiation. To the dismay of the earl's family, the title passes to his son Jack (Peter O'Toole), who has been locked away for eight years after claiming to be the second coming of Jesus Christ. Mad but harmless, Jack is released to assume his seat. However, his embrace of Christianity proves incompatible with a position of power in "normal" society, where peace and love are considered serious weaknesses, and a somewhat unhinged psychiatrist is called to help him adjust. Meanwhile, Jack's scheming uncle, Sir Charles (William Mervyn), works on developing a complex scheme to trick Jack out of his position. Loaded with idiosyncratic touches from eccentric camera angles to unexpected outbursts of song, the film creates an experience nearly as inspired and mad as O'Toole's brilliantly hilarious central performance. The film's devilish invention may at times seem overloaded, but most drawbacks are redeemed by the sharpness of the satire, particularly during the memorably disturbing finale. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

- Peter O'Toole, Alastair Sim, (more)
