Village life in post-World War I Finland is the theme of this film. Among the stories explored is that of a young governess who brings a breath of humanity into the life of a neglected boy. A diamond heist sets the stage for sight gags and improbable events in this crime farce. Johannes (Sven Wollter) disguises himself in the holy robes of a cardinal to escape the wrath of a mob kingpin. Others in the gang dress up as a priest, a nun, a monk, and a corpse. The monk gets drunk in a local bar, the cardinal puts the moves on the nun, and the corpse (Asko Sarkola) jumps up and runs away while on public display. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

The age-old conflict between citified strangers and comfy-as-old shoes rural folks is the backbone of this drama, which concerns a wedding taking place far in the northern part of Sweden. When a city boy comes to marry his country bride, he finds that her family's anti-city prejudices are as strong as his own more "sophisticated" ones. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This biographical film celebrates the little-known life of the Finnish novelist and revolutionary Maiju Lassila (Asko Sarkola), born in 1868. Lassila's early years are briefly shown, then the film richly details his active and paradoxically reclusive adult life, beginning with his sojourn in St. Petersburg, working as a businessman. Unable to stay away from politics, he caused the assassination of a high-ranking Czarist and as a result, had to run back to Finland to hide. Once established in the comparative safety of a small village, he taught school in order to support his real vocation as a writer. Always living on the edge of poverty, if not square in the middle of it, Lassila continues to avoid public contact - he keeps his identity low-key and camoflages it by publishing under a variety of pseudonyms. While tucked away in the village he is beguiled into a long-running affair with Olga Esempio (Rea Mauranen), a one-time actress, that ends soon after the birth of their still-born child. Lassila moves to Helsinki after the split with Olga; she has taken another lover and the impossibility of their reunion becomes apparent. There is a great deal of political turmoil in these last years in Helsinki - arising from the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the German occupation of Finland in 1918. Therein lie the seeds for the final destiny of this nationalist hero. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
