Lucelia Santos plays the controversial Luz del Fuego in this film about the Brazilian striptease maven who performed with equally naked live snakes, in an era (the 1950s) when striptease, with or without live snakes, was a social pariah. She went on to found a nudist colony on an island in Rio's Guanabara Bay, and was regularly linked with one prominent politician or another. This vampire story by Brazilian director Ivan Cardoso is interspersed with humor and nuanced with a 1950s look. A group of young women are performing in a nightclub act called "The Seven Vampires" at a respectable and (apparently) prosperous hotel. While they are play-acting in the beginning, their roles take on another aura after a "killer vegetable" changes a scientist into a vampire. For many centuries, most of the good farming land in Brazil has been owned by a few fabulously wealthy families. The poor and peasants have been forced to make do with whatever little plots of land these families will allow them to till, or with the wages they get for farming for the great landowners. In 1985, 1500 poor Brazilians invaded a huge farm in Rio Grande do Sul and claimed it for their own, making a village there. While the government and landowners pressed for the occupation to end, the villagers used the power of publicity to press for land reform -- something often promised in every South American country and never yet delivered in any meaningful way. All three of the main female characters in this film were performed by Lucella Santos. The three women in question all live around a plaza in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, and none of them is aware of the others. Though their adult responses to deeply flawed childhoods are very different, each of them was abandoned in a very hurtful way by their fathers. One sleeps around incessantly, for no particular reason. This Brazilian drama chronicles the lives between three female roommates sharing an apartment in Vitoria, Brazil. Former music teacher Gertrudes is hiding from the world after her lover spurns her. Magdalena is a free spirit. By day she works in a mental hospital; at night she is out in search of men. Lucia is the third, and most troubled roommate.
