Mexican star oncreen from the '60s. ~ All Movie GuideBenjamin Cann's epic telenovela La Otra observes the schemes and manipulations at the heart of a wealthy family. Carlota is the bastard daughter of filthy rich Leopoldo and his selfish, evil mistress Bernarda. When Leopoldo dies, he bequeaths his multimillion dollar inheritance to Carlota and half-sister Eugenia; Bernarda absolutely will not hear of this, however, and plots and schemes to keep the girls out of wedlock so that she can keep the money. Defying Carlota's wishes, each of the girls becomes romantically involved with a man - Carlota with physician Alvaro Ibanez, Eugenia with Leopoldo's psychotically depraved son Roman, who gets her unwittingly pregnant. Tragically, Eugenia dies while giving birth, but Bernarda sees her opportunity and ends the Carlota-Alvaro marriage by lying to Alvaro and convincing him that Carlota died. Little can Bernarda foresee, however, the tortuous complications that will arise when Alvaro moves out to a rural location and just happens to meet a young lady identical to Carlota - with designs on Alvaro's wealth. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

One of several films produced by a group of Mexico's independent filmmakers, this heart-warming Christmas tale by director Fernando Cortez is oriented toward family viewing. Meant to awaken the spirit of this season, the story centers around a young boy (Emir Angel Dupeyron) who wants to remind his parents and his neighbors what Christmas is really about. His mother (Beatrice Aguirre) and father (Jorge Martínez de Hoyos) are compassionate and understanding parents and so the boy's new-found mission is not exactly a hopeless cause. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The great screen surrealist Luis Buñuel co-wrote and directed this dark, bitterly witty satire. A group of people in formal dress arrives at an elegantly appointed home for a dinner party. However, once dinner is over and the guests retire to the drawing room, they discover that the servants have gone away, and for some reason they cannot leave. There is no explanation why -- there are no locked doors or barred windows preventing them from going home -- but the guests are convinced that they're stranded. Left to their own devices, they slowly but gradually degenerate into genteel savagery, taking an axe to a water pipe for drinking water, killing and eating a sheep that was to be part of the post-dinner entertainment, hiding the bodies of dead guests in the closet, dabbling in witchcraft, and burning the furniture. Buñuel's dry, quixotic wit is abundantly displayed in this film. Leading the cast was Silvia Pinal, the renowned actress who starred in several of Buñuel's Mexican films (she was married to noted producer Gustavo Alatriste, who produced several films with Buñuel). Other than the short subject Simon of the Desert, El Angel Exterminador proved to be Buñuel's last film made in his adopted homeland. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
