This fact-filled biography of the Russian diplomat Georgi Chicherin was released in 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death. Chicherin, a Russian aristocrat, was jailed in London not long after the 1917 Revolution. Lenin gets him released and puts him in charge of foreign relations for the new USSR. Chicherin soon finds himself in Italy, hobnobbing with the likes of Lloyd George and the King of Italy (quite a contrast to his stay in prison). Involved in the first signing of a peace accord with Germany, Chicherin has to follow orders even if he personally does not agree with the accord. But at the same time, he put all his efforts into obtaining the accord, and in so doing breaks the diplomatic blockade of his now Communist homeland. Chicherin's career unfolds against a tumultuous historical backdrop. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this watchable sci fi story based on a novel by Sergei Pavlov, the time is the 21st century, and the space security organization has a dangerous situation on its hands -- it seems four individuals from outer space have the ability to change form and to affect radio transmissions and magnetic fields. Their powers could threaten governments on earth and seem to derive from an unusual accident on one of the moons of Uranus shortly after four astronauts landed. Now the space police have to bring this potentially disastrous situation under control. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Andrei Myagkov stars as a researcher whose work is "stolen" by his supervisors. In return, he enjoys the comforts of a promotion with a car, a nice apartment, and he is married to a beautiful woman. He is perfectly happy and complacent in his new life until he meets his teenage daughter who grew up without him in another town. This "wakes him up" to such an extent that he is even willing to give up his own life to save someone else's life. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

An actress (Natalia Sayko) is faced with the job of dubbing her voice after the final version of her movie is wrapped. (All actors dub their lines for the master copy of a film.) But she is overcome by her own life-crisis that alters her plans -- just released from the hospital, she realizes that her illness is more than she can emotionally handle -- it will kill her eventually. Overwhelmed, she has to reconsider her simple task of dubbing from a completely new perspective. This film had an attendance of 2.3 million in the Soviet Union when it was released. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Aleksandr Pushkin's Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights known as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to English-speaking audiences provides the storyline for this conventional fairy tale. Just as a young princess is about to marry her handsome prince, her evil and truly gorgeous stepmother, after querying her mirror on "who is the fairest of them all," sends her packing. The seven well-built heroes who give the princess shelter are anything but dwarfs and certainly capable of rescuing her. Thanks to their ingenuity and muscle, they are instrumental in making sure the princess and the now frantic prince are reunited, no matter what the stepmother thinks. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This Soviet Russian film is loosely based on Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. Georgian director Georgi Daniela aptly brings the sometimes obscure, even surreal, Georgian sense of humor to the screen using two of his favorite actors, Vakhtang Kikabidze (as the "Duke") and Yevgeni Leonov (as the "King"). In the movie, Huck is more or less happily learning how to properly use a knife and fork when his drunken, abusive father hauls him away. Fortunately, he is able to run away from his father, and he joins up with the escaped slave Jim. The two of them journey down the big river and have many adventures in the company of the Duke and the King, two eccentric and unlucky con-men. One highlight is the scene in which the two con-men, whose scheme has gone awry, are tarred and feathered by angry townsfolk. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
