This surreal Dutch drama bears resemblance to David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" as it examines the reaction of a small fundamentalist Christian town that suddenly discovers it contains a kiddie-porn ring in its midst. The film was assembled from a three-part TV series. Oude Tongen is a very conservative little town. It is deeply religious and no prostitutes or beer halls can be found within the city limits. It seems that misdeeds by inhabitants of the Dutch provinces make for believable stories, whether they are mysteries by Willem van de Wettering, or psychological thrillers by Simon Vestdijk, who wrote the book this film is based on. In the story, set in the 1950s, Hendrik Grond (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) has a good law practice, and a happy marriage which has produced a son. He is so contented that his world is completely shattered when, undetected, he catches his wife in bed with his law firm's senior partner. In fact, he has become quietly unhinged, and he arranges a series of "accidents" to ensure his revenge - becoming involved in the local underworld in the process. In a thirtysomething exchange of angst, the son of a successful architect has agreed to paint his father's home. The parents are heading toward a divorce and want to sell their house. Since their son is a painter in need of work, they give him the job of putting a new coat of color on the walls. Some friends stop by to pay the son a visit and due to an unexpected thunderstorm are forced to hole up on the premises longer than they planned. This is a story of the relationships between six people preparing for a good-bye dinner for their common friend Percival (Gerardjan Rijnders), and as the actors prepare for their roles by getting into costumes and character, the story -- or lack of it -- begins. Voiceovers narrate the thoughts of each of the friends, whose facial expressions and vocal nuances are charged with conveying the depth of complex knots of mixed emotions, from love and loyalty to pride and envy.
