A real-life murder story that commanded headlines for several months in 1990 served as the basis for the tense but unsatisfying cable-TV movie Judgment Day: Ellie Nesler Story. Christine Lahti stars as Ellie Nesler, who cannot help but notice that her seven-year-old son Brandon (Andrew Ducote) has been sullen and withdrawn since returning from summer camp. Eventually it is revealed that Brandon had been sexually molested by camp counselor Daniel Driver (Robert Bockstael)--and that Driver has had a history of such repellant behavior, but has managed to remain out of prison thanks to the loopholes of the legal system. Driven over the edge when Driver beats the rap once more, Ellie confronts the man outside a courtroom and shoots him dead! The rest of the film recounts Ellie's murder trial, and the spectacular outpouring of public reaction--both pro and con--in its wake. Though it is uncompromising in detailing the long-range consequences of the actions by both Ellie Nesler and Daniel Driver, the film refuses to take a definite stance of its own in the controversy, and thus its dramatic impact is muted. A video game designer hacks into a bank's computer system and skims money from various corporate accounts. Though she has three partners in this crime, Carly (Diana Reis) decides to cut them out of the deal, and hides the location of the money within the software of her newest game, Thrillkill. When she is murdered by a mysterious third party, her jilted partners are determined to find the three million dollars before they too are laid to rest. Carly's sister Bobbie (Gina Massey), a flight attendant, happens to be in town and becomes their main target. Luckily, a friendly detective named Frank Gillette (Robin Ward) steps in to keep Bobbie safe and try to unravel the clues that Carly left before her death. All they know is that it has something to do with Thrillkill, but time is running out. The body count rises and double-crosses become triple-crosses as the thieves try to find the money before Bobbie and Frank do. But Frank isn't exactly the man he claims to be, and he may be leading Bobbie into a trap for his own financial gain. ~ Fred Beldin, All Movie Guide

A Matter of Sex is the calculatedly misleading title of a based-on-fact TV movie, which originally bore the more suitable title Women of Willmar. In 1976, the women working in a bank in Willmar, Minnesota become incensed because less-qualified men are being promoted over them. Head teller Jean Stapleton, with the help of attorney Peter Dvorsky and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, organizes an employee's union. When the chauvinistic bank officers cause negotiations to break down, Stapleton and seven other female employees go on strike--a job action which lasts for two years, despite political and social pressure from the community. Director Lee Grant, whose daughter Dinah Manoff is cast as one of the strikers, had previously helmed a documentary based on the same incident, The Willmar Eight--which was telecast on PBS the night before the January 1984 network premiere of A Matter of Sex. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
