Horatiu Malaele helmed this Romanian-language nuptial comedy. A period film set in March 1953, at the exact moment of Josef Stalin's death, it tells of a couple, Fira (Luminita Gheorgiu) and Iancu (Alexandru Potoceanu) determinedly attempting to celebrate their wedding festivities despite repeated interruptions thanks to the dictator's passing. Kinai vedelem is based on the true story of Peter György, a Romanian of Hungarian descent from Transylvania, who spent twenty-two years imprisoned in a Gulag near the Ussuri river. During the border conflict between the Soviet Union and China, he was liberated by the Chinese and allowed to return home. He arrived in Transylvania with a roll of dollar bills and a piece of radioactive uranium; he had been instructed to inform the Romanians (and the representatives of the Ceausescu regime maneuvering between Moscow and Beijing) about the horrors of his imprisonment, as well as the economic and atomic potential of the People's Republic of China. The authorities were highly suspicious of him, and began following him everywhere. His money and papers were confiscated, and he became a victim of bureaucracy, a worse humiliation than what he had already endured. The film, which reflects the absurd realities of Romania under the regime of Ceausescu, is the first co-production between Hungary and Romania. In this French-Romanian thriller, a rookie prosecutor teams up with a female topographer to investigate the mysterious death of a coal miner. Upon his first look at the mine, prosecutor Costa feels appalled by the terrible, unsafe conditions there. He makes a full report to the mine administrators but they, fully aware that their mine is a death trap, and caring only for profit, are disinterested. The miners, desperately needing their jobs, would rather keep things quiet too. Meanwhile Costas and Alina, the topographer become better acquainted until news of a newly discovered corpse, in a supposedly closed section of the mine reaches them. More bodies then turn up. Costas finds a key clue in some early mine footage and with only that, manages to bring the killer to justice. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In Transylvania, in the 19th century, the village birthplace of a rich farmer's son is undergoing a cholera epidemic when he returns from studying at a university, and bodies are being removed from houses. When a carpenter is unjustly accused of stealing a radio and some belongings on a beach, rather than justice prevailing as it should, a neurotic surgeon who saw the actual theft decides to testify against the carpenter and get him thrown in jail -- he just does not like the man. The worst happens, and the carpenter serves his time behind bars, yet even when he gets out of prison, the surgeon unrelentingly goes after him. Viewers who have paid bad carpenters might sympathize, but otherwise, the surgeon's behavior over a minor theft and an innocent man makes one wonder how he passed certification to cut people open. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Rumanian Army troops attack a castle where the Nazis have been trapped. Led by a fanatical general, the Germans try to hold off a vicious attack by the once friendly Rumanians. The Nazi hold out until the official German surrender puts an end to the conflict in this routine war drama highlighted by some excellent battle scenes. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

In this undistinguished drama, Darclee (Silvia Popovici) is a lead singer for an opera company in Romania with a heavy load of responsibility. It seems the company is in dire need of a decent physical structure for their performances and a brace -- or more -- of good singers to improve their image and sales. In other words, they need just about everything except an excellent lead singer; Darclee fills that bill.
