Carlos Saura, one of the finest and most distinctive filmmakers in the Spanish cinema, wrote and directed this biographical epic concerning one of Spain's greatest artists, the painter Francisco de Goya y Lucientes. On his deathbed, Goya (Francisco Rabal), attended by his mistress, Leocadia (Eulalia Ramon) and their daughter, Rosario (Dafne Fernandez), is plagued by hallucinations and frequent visions of the beautiful Cayetana (Maribel Verdu) as his mind reels through the events of his life. As a young man, Goya (played in his younger days by Jose Coronado) became the court painter to King Charles and the Royal Family, where he created technically skillful but uninteresting portraits and was invited to a number of royal functions. At one such affair, Goya first met Cayetana, the Duchess of Alba, and he was immediately smitten; they became lovers, and she was both the subject and inspiration of several major works, including "Desnuda" and "La Maja Vestida." Goya's work developed a dark undercurrent after Napoleon invaded Spain and he took up with Leocadia, creating disturbing images that alienated his patrons and frightened his children. In time, the decline of the court and a changing political climate forced Goya to seek exile in France in 1824, where he would die four years later. Goya In Bordeaux was a project that Saura had dreamed of filming for years, and he was ably assisted in recreating the look of Goya's paintings by master cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A relatively simple coming-of-age drama with autobiographical overtones from Carlos Saura, one of Spain's leading directors, the story is told from the viewpoint of 10-year-old Manu as he is shuffled from relative to relative in the hometown of his parents, who are busy trying to decide whether or not to divorce. That each of Manu's relatives is eccentric only adds spice to the low-key tale. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this rambling, slow-paced and basically mild horror story, an artist gets in his car and winds up in a small Catalan town. There, he is bedded by a bevy of women who are handmaidens for the devil, and meanwhile he tries to make some sense out of this by consulting with occultists. One side effect of all this diabolical sex is that he also suffers from hallucinations, which don't help him very much in his efforts to come back to reality. This odd drama is based on a novel by (Manuel Pedrolo. Reviewers reported finding a great deal of inadvertent humor in the film's extremely pretentious dialog. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

After the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), Spain was governed by the moralistic and occasionally heavy-handed Falangist regime of General Francisco Franco. However, as time passed, the government's strict restrictions on public behavior, divorce and so on were eased. Compared to the 1940s in Spain, 1968 was a period of almost licentious ease. Even though very little of the generational turmoil that seethed throughout the developed world at the time reached Spain, enough did to be noticeable. This story tells what happens when a relatively "liberal" man who chose voluntary exile after the war returns to visit his family and friends during this period. Jesus (Jose Soriano) is distressed to find the values he cherished seemingly part of the past, as he reunites with his family. He visits his brother's divorced wife and watches her become senseless with drink, and hears curse words freely used at a bar during a card game. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

- Fernando Fernán Gómez, Rafaela Aparicio, (more)
Reviewers were scathing in their assessment of this exploitation film, made in the Catalan language. The vague story, set in Barcelona, has something to do with an executive who has a taste for prostitutes and the trouble this gets him into. The first part of the film chronicles his bedroom exploits, while the second part is a violent and incredibly gory and macabre shoot-em-up. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

- Mario Gas, Eulalia Ramon, (more)
