Colin Nutley's prequel to his 2001 film Deadline, Paradise tells the story of how tabloid reporter Annika Bengtzon (Helena Bergström) cracked her first big story. On the low-end of the totem pole at the tabloid where she is employed, Annika receives a call from Rebecca Björkstig (Lisa Nilsson) encouraging her to write a story about a domestic abuse protection and recovery foundation known as Paradise. Having had first-hand experience with that problem, Annika is sympathetic to Paradise's aims. After taking a call from a distressed woman named Aida (Suzanna Dilber) in which Aida claims to have an abusive significant other, Annika puts Aida into the Paradise program. However, Annika does some investigative work and discovers that Aida may be involved in a shooting and that Paradise may not be what it seems. Paradise is an adaptation of one of a popular series of novels written by Liza Marklund. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

A tiny theatrical company turns into a war zone of egos as a new play goes into rehearsal in this broad comedy from Sweden. A camera crew from a television outlet is on hand to shoot a commercial as a harried director (Tova Mahnusson Norling) tries to put her cast through their paces. Not everyone, however, feels like cooperating; her two leading men (Orjan Ramberg and Dan Ekborg) seem to be competing over who gets most of the spotlight, much to the annoyance of the female star (Lena Nyman), while the troupe's makeup artist (Gosta Ekman) has a plan of his own. Puder was written and directed by Marie-Louise Ekman, whose husband Gosta Ekman plays the flamboyantly gay makeup man. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

In this black comedy, a charming family man's response to his own tendency to take on too much work is to periodically indulge in bouts of drinking. Rather than say that he is drunk, his family has taken to saying "Dad's tired and emotional again." One of the highlights of the film is Gosta Ekman's bravura performance as the alcoholic father. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
In this fast-paced MTV-style crime drama, four young men who have made a living at petty crime get more deeply involved in the drug underworld, and experience violence at an entirely new level. This action-oriented film was made by two young men who themselves participated in that life, with a grant from Svensk Filmindustri. While it is probably intended as a cautionary tale, reviewers thought it likelier to encourage violence rather than deter it. They also found the (apparently) deliberate underacting throughout somewhat disturbing. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
This is an overly long, socio-psychological drama about the emotional turmoil of 15-year-old foster-child Sussie (Anna Linden) and the difficulties experienced in her foster family. After Sussie arrives in her new home, her own inadequacies are mirrored in the family. The mother wants to win Sussie's affection, the father wants perhaps a little more than her affection, and the son is out-and-out infatuated with her. Given this environment, and her own instability, Sussie either is literally slashing out at people and things, or at herself. With little visible redemption in sight (though not ultimately discarded either), this is not a movie for the casual filmgoer. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In a farce that starts out galloping but then stumbles and essentially collapses, a few crooks end up cheating other crooks as the story bobbles along between Sweden and Cuba. First a sleazy used-car salesman cons an innocent hair stylist into buying a wreck of a car. Next, the stylist's crooked brother gets out of prison and decides to fleece the car dealer in turn. And so it goes, back and forth, until everything seems to get out of hand, and the story and characters are buried in the process. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

- Janne Carlsson, Gosta Walivaara, (more)
A nail-biting, hair-raising suspense yarn that feeds on jealousy, this chilling film by Hans Alfredson has John (Sverre Anker Ousdal), a philandering husband, fall in love with Clara (Malin Ek), a young poetess. When Clara and John move into an apartment on the sleazy side of town, neither her former lover nor his wife put up much objection. Then oddly menacing things start to happen in the apartment: objects are misplaced in a dangerous way, the gas leaks, and someone unknown is filling the place with graffiti. Clara's health degenerates rapidly, and as ominous circumstances push her and John to the brink, a shocking revelation looms ahead. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Jack (Goran Stangertz), an aspiring young writer, has some adventures which are possible only for the young and realizes that these are the raw material for his future vocation. He has an early and rewarding sexual encounter with a society girl, parties around with his pals, and generally experiences the uncomplicated life of the young. One of his efforts is to save an exotically attractive girl (Tove Linde) addicted to hard drugs. This rambling movie was extremely popular with young Swedish audiences at the time of its release (1977). ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
