Lex Luthor has been elected President of the United States, he's using an earthbound Kryptonite asteroid as grounds for declaring a $1 billion bounty on the heads of Superman and Batman. They can't do it on their own, but finding help won't be easy because every hero and villain on the planet is looking to collect that juicy bounty. Upon entering its third season, the animated series Justice League serves up quite a few changes in its format. For starters, the titular League, comprised of the Earth's mightiest superheroes, is now under the full control of J'onn J'onnz, aka the Martian Manhunter, with former leaders Superman and Batman taking rather than issuing orders. For another, the League has been given a brand-new headquarters in an orbiting Earth satellite. Finally and most significantly, the series' title has been changed to Justice League Unlimited, reflecting the sudden expansion of the League's membership roster. In addition to old favorites J'onn J'onnz, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, the Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, the League has welcomed such newcomers as the Green Arrow, Supergirl, and Captain Atom along with a few "stringers" whom J'onn J'onnz occasionally calls upon for backup, utilizing their unique crime-fighting talents to the utmost. Foremost among the big story developments during season three include the reformation of former villain Lex Luthor, an effort by wicked sorcerer Mordred to banish all adults from the Earth (forcing several League members to transform into eight-year-olds!), the arrival of a new superhero team called the Ultimen, the resurrection of Batman's supposedly deceased perennial foe Solomon Grundy, and a time-warp journey to the Old West on one end of the spectrum and to a futuristic Gotham City at the other end. It is, in fact, this last-named adventure, the two-part "The Once and Future Thing," which brings the third season of Justice League (or is it, technically, the first season of Justice League Unlimited?) to a pulse-pounding conclusion. ~ Rovi

The second season of the animated series Justice League finds the titular superheroes -- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, the Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and the Martian Manhunter -- continuing to combine their awesome powers to vanquish all manner of villainy, both earthbound and extraterrestrial. As in season one, several of the Justice League's adventures unfold in two- and three-episode story arcs, the better to give the viewer full value in terms of action and thrills -- and the better to explore the various personality quirks and intramural rivalries that are part and parcel of the League's makeup. This season, the League does battle against such familiar comic-book heavies as Darkseid, Brainiac, Lex Luthor (who in one incredible plot strand ends up as President of "New Earth"), the Joker,Harley Quinn, and Gorilla Grodd. Also seen during the season's 26 episodes are a few representatives of the "normal" side of the League members' existence, notably Superman's occasional girlfriend Lois Lane and Batman's faithful butler Alfred. Season two of Justice League wraps things up with a powerful three-part adventure, "Starcrossed," wherein the denizens of Hawkgirl's home planet lay siege upon the human world -- the better to destroy it. ~ Rovi

Season one of the animated series Justice League opens with the three-part "Secret Origins," which explains the reason that the League is formed and establishes the principal players. Duped into disarming the Earth's warheads, veteran superhero Superman is aghast when a fleet of bug-like space aliens attacks the Earth, led on by the traitorous Senator J. Allen Carter. Flying to the orbiting space-station headquarters of Batman, Superman and his fellow crime-fighter try to mount a strong defense against the extraterrestrials, only to discover that it is too much of a job for just the two of them. Thus is formed the mighty Justice League, comprised of Superman and Batman's comic-book confreres the Green Lantern, the Flash, Wonder Woman, and Hawkgirl -- with added backup from a new member of the gang, the telepathic, shape-shifting Martian Manhunter (aka J'onn J'onnz). Once the alien insects are thwarted, the Justice League embarks upon several new adventures, most of them unfolding in two-part story arcs. Though the League members are united in a common cause, there is a certain amount of friction, rivalry, and envy amongst them -- just like any "normal" exclusive club. Featured in the series' 26 are a number of characters who will be familiar to any fan of the original Justice League comic-book line, including underwater superhero Aquaman; Wonder Woman's mother, Hippolyta, and erstwhile boyfriend Steve Trevor; black crime-fighter Virgil "Static Shock" Hawkins; and Sgt. Rock (of Easy Company). Several infamous villains also make appearances, among them Superman's perennial nemesis Lex Luthor (who at one point organizes a rival team of bad guys called The Injustice Guild), Batman's longtime enemy the Joker, and such reprehensible reprobates as Brainiac, Mordred, Star Sapphire, the Shade, and the simian criminal genius Grodd. The season ends with the three-part adventure "The Savage Time," wherein six Justice League members are transported back to D-day during World War 2! ~ Rovi

Such formidable villains as Shriek, Inque, the Jokerz and the Royal Flush gang continue to make like difficult for the "new" Batman, aka Terry McGinniss, as he tries to purge crime from the Gotham City of 2021 AD in Season Three of the animated Batman Beyond. Adding to Terry's burden this season is an old friend who has switched over to the dark side and reemerged as criminal genius "Big Time" Bigelow; and then there's that "invulnerable" supervillain whom even Batman cannot defeat despite a veritable arsenal of high-tech crimebusting hardware. As for "original" Batman Bruce Wayne, he is not as embittered and isolated as in seasons past, though he still yearns for the days of his idealistic youth, so much so that he agrees to undergo an experiment that will shave several years off his age--an experiment which, unfortunately, carries a heavy price tag. Episode highlights during the third season include the two-part "The Call", a crossover with the like-vintage superhero cartoon series Justice League of America, with guest appearances by Superman, Aquagirl, the Green Lantern and Warhawk--one of whom will, to universal horror, emerge as the villain of the piece. Teenager Terry McGinniss continues following in the footsteps of his aged mentor Bruce Wayne as the "new" Batman of the 21st century in Season Two of the animated Batman Beyond. In addition to such traditional nemeses as Shriek, Inque, the Spellbinder, the Jokerz and the Royal Flush Gang, Terry-Batman has his gloved hands full dealing with several new threats to the wellbeing of Gotham City, among them Earthmover, who has a talent for creating humanoids out of dirt; Sneak Peek, a unscrupulous--and invisible--TV newscasters; Bombshell, a dangerous telepath; and crazed big-game hunter Stalker. One of the newly minted antagonists, the rogue holographic assassin Zeta, will appear in only a handful of episodes before being spun off into his own series, The Zeta Project. Although Batman Beyond is set in the future, several of issues addressed in the Season Two episodes are sure to strike a chord with contemporary audiences. The late-20th-century tendency by disenfranchised youngsters to experiment with deadly drug combinations is dramatized in an episode wherein Batman confronts the new teen craze of "splicing", or mixing one's genes with animal DNA. In other episodes, one of Terry's lady friends is harassed by a stalker; a "tough love" boot camp for troubled teens turns out to have a deadly hidden agenda; and at least one otherwise scrupulous scientist turns to a life of crime after "downsized" during an economic recession. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In the decaying, crime-ridden Gotham City of the future, embittered millionaire Bruce Wayne is persuaded to pass along the mantle (and mask and cowl) of legendary "Caped Crusader" Batman to teenager Terry McGinniss in Season One of the animated series Batman Beyond. The two-part pilot establishes the fact that Terry has been given this honor because he has stumbled onto Wayne's long-buried secret identity, and because the teen wants to avenge the death of his own father by a sinister cartel bent on world domination. The elderly Wayne instructs Terry in the intricacies of his high-tech, gadget-laden Batsuit and shows him how to navigate the new flying Batmobile. Meanwhile, Wayne's business partner Derek Powers, the secret brains behind the conspiracy, works overtime to scuttle Terry McGinniss/Batman's crusade to restore law and order to Gotham City. Also in the opening episode, we are introduced to the Jokerz, a gang of "Clockwork Orange"-like street punks who have enshrined the memory of the "old" Batman's prankish nemesis, the Joker. Other villains whom the new Batman tangles with this season are shapeshifting female saboteur Inque; the Royal Flush Gang, so named because they were card-like costumes and go by the names of King, Queen, Jack, Ten and Ace; Shriek, who can demolish skyscrapers with his high-pitched sound waves; the mesmerindign Spellbinder, Curare, a ninja assassin; Derek Powers' son Paxton, every bit as ruthless and demonic as his dad; and even a revitalized Mr. Freeze--or rather, Mr. Freeze's cryogenically frozen head. Plus: Just as Terry McGinnis had accidentally glommed onto the fact that Bruce Wayne and the earlier Batman were one and the same, so to does his discover in a rather spectacular fashion the fact that the current police commissioner of Gotham City, silver-haired Barbara Gordon, once went by the name of Batgirl. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Temistocles Lopez's Chain of Desire, based on Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde, plays like an AIDS-era version of The Yellow Rolls Royce, in which a series of unrelated amorous lovers are connected by a "chain of desire." The film begins as Alma D'Angeli (Linda Fiorentino) flees from a lover and runs into a church, where she finds solace and a young Latino worker, Jesus (Elias Koteas). They make love. Then Jesus comes home to his wife Isa (Angel Aviles) and gets intimate with her. The next morning, Isa goes off to see Dr. Jerald Buckley (Patrick Bauchau), with whom she is having an affair. After seeing Isa, Jerald heads off to visit Linda (Grace Zabriskie), a sexy dominatrix. Linda returns home to her husband, Hubert (Malcolm MacDowell), a harried television commentator. After an unsatisfactory interview with women who claim to have had affairs with John F. Kennedy, he relieves his tensions by seeking the arms of Keith (Jamie Harrold), a teenage hustler. And the trail continues on as gay social worker Ken (Tim Guinee) offers Ken a place for the night, followed by Ken's lover David Bango (Dewey Martin) and hot dancer Diana (Holly Marie Combs), who wants David to deflower her. Coming on the scene after that is famed artist Mel (Seymour Cassel), who has a tryst with Diana, but he finds that he has to answer to his vindictive wife, Cleo (Assumpta Serna). At the end, all the characters arrive at a hip nightclub, where Alma, the singer at the club, has learned that the lover she had spurned at the beginning of the film has been diagnosed with AIDS. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

In an episode blatantly inspired by current events (those of early 1991, that is), the network carrying "FYI" is taken over by a huge corporation called American Industrial Enterprises. Almost immediately, the company's barracudalike VP Barbara Boyle (Nancy Youngblut) begins imposing Draconian budget limitations on the "FYI" staffers; at one point, investigative reporter Frank [Joe Regalbuto] is forced to go undercover wearing only a ludicrous pair of "Groucho glasses" as a disguise.
