A quiet tale of tragedy based on the stage play by Thomas Strittmatter, this lugubrious story of a Polish woman's ill-fated stay on a German farm at the end of World War II is not a good testimonial for human values. After the timid Anna has worked for awhile on the farm, the family accepts her into their fold, much more than Nazi regulations would allow. Before long, a pregnant Anna is found murdered, her body floating in a nearby lake. The police commissioner takes advantage of the investigation to hide out at the farm in order to escape the approaching Allied forces. After it becomes clear who the murderer must be, the farm wife is left alone with the police commissioner, and the two soon start up an intimate relationship. The saga continues -- right into a very awkward future. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Sex and politics are meant to coincide with each other in this over-extended, dull drama set in 1934 in Finland, yet they seem to cancel each other out. Johanna (Katharina Thalbach) has fled Nazi Germany to visit a friend in Finland, and from there she continues on to her friend's family's estate. Once at the estate, Johanna passionately argues with her friend's pro-Nazi brother and at the same time, falls for the second, good-looking brother who shares her own anti-fascist feelings. The two are soon engaged in an active sexual relationship that continues as they travel north to an Arctic port. Once there, they suddenly revert to their political personas as they begin to debate whether Johanna should stay with him in relative safety or go to Paris where she can join others in the resistance movement. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

First-time director and writer Rolf Silber has skimmed the surface in this comedy about a bank teller who ends up with some money accidentally left behind in a robbery. After loaning some of the cash to his friends, the teller runs away to join a road company because he is in love with one of its actresses. The teller's father is an Elvis Presley fan, and his fellow bank workers are an odd lot, so perhaps the teller cannot be blamed for leaving it all behind him. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A West German family tries to survive in the years following World War II in this depressing social and political drama. Weary of war, the people hope to live the remainder of their lives in peace. As the Berlin Wall emerges, the couple's socially inept daughter asks her father why he made the transition from resistance fighter to Nazi sympathizer. As the Berlin Wall is being constructed, there are more symbolic barriers that will be even harder to overcome. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
