Sisters Selma (Gloria Pires), Regina (Andrea Beltrao), Laura (Paloma Duarte) and Lucia (Lilia Cabral) are the main characters in Daniel Filho's The Inheritance. The women have come together upon the death of their mother. All of the women are, at the very least, quirky. Married Selma appears to be the most "together" of the group, but an attraction to the man selling her mother's apartment, and the announcement that Selma's daughter is in a cult, alters her life. Laura is struggling with her sexual identity. Regina is estranged from her musician son. The sale of their mother's apartment leads to mounting tension between the sisters. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

In this Brazilian romantic comedy-drama, set in Rio, Luiza (Andrea Beltrao) meets researcher Gabriel (Daniel Dantas), who is involved in an unpleasant divorce. Although the two immediately hit it off, they soon encounter predictable problems. The title refers to the fact that the movie has been scripted into sequences arranged alphabetically, such as "R" for Revenge, while another gimmick has the film's main characters giving marital advice directly into the camera. Shown at 1997 film festivals (Vancouver, Sundance). ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

This Brazilian story is set in 1910 in a southern rural community populated by Italian immigrants. There average-looking but hard-working Angelo, a peasant, marries free-spirited and lovely Teresa. After the wedding he goes into business with the handsome Massimo. Massimo's wife is the plain but good-hearted Pierina. Their grain business grows into a major success and as they begin raising families, Massimo and Teresa find themselves inexorably drawn to each other. They end up having an affair and abandoning their less beautiful spouses. Fortunately, the two abandoned spouses discover that they too have fallen in love. The whole sinful situation becomes a thorn in the disapproving parish priest's side, and he threatens to destroy their business. But the business continues flourishing and soon both couples begin bearing more children. Happiness ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
Produced in Brazil, but with an eye on the American market, Jorge um Brasileiro features Hollywood's Dean Stockwell and home-grown star Carlos Alberto Riccelli. The two leading men play truck drivers, whose friendship is threatened when Mario (Stockwell) is promoted. Jorge (Riccelli) is certain that his relationship with Mario will go on as before, but he's sadly mistaken. Never overplaying its hand, Jorge um Brasileiro paints its characters in three-dimensional terms: Stockwell isn't a bad sort, he simply takes himself too seriously. Director Paulo Thaigo co-wrote the screenplay with Alcione Araujo. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The story in this inventive and critically well-regarded film is told backwards, beginning in the 1980s and detailing the lives of two couples who were deeply affected by the popular song of the 1960s "Besame Mucho". From then until the 1980s, pop music defines the key moments in their lives. The effects of each situation are shown first, and then the causes are gradually revealed, culminating with the characters' college years. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Based on the first-hand writings of Brazilian political-activist Graciliano Ramos, Memories of Prison, stars Carlos Vereze as Ramos. The time-frame is the 1930s, during the dictatorial regime of Getulio Vargas. Because of his anti-Vargas sentiments, Ramos is shipped off to a hellhole of a prison island. Knowing full well that he's expected to die in jail rather than be "rehabilitated," Ramos nonetheless survives, if for no other reason than to expose the sadistic cruelties of Vargas' minions. Placing an unpleasant period in Brazilian history within a personal perspective, Memories of Prison is one of the best of the many films directed by Nelson Pereira Dos Santos. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The horror of life in a Brazilian prison from an inmate's view is chronicled in this drama based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Gracilano Ramos. The tale takes place in the 1930s when Brazil was run by dictator Getulio Vargas. It begins as the Marxist oriented protagonist is arrested with no explanation. Once imprisoned, the authorities allow him to write--provided he can find pen and paper. In the end, his writing has such impact on the public that authorities release him. Had they not, he would have died from their brutal cruelty. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
A Brazilian police official has been sent to a remote area of the country (in the state of Goias) on some undercover mission, and along the way a beautiful female member of one of Brazil's native tribes befriends him, and at one point, saves his life. They become very close -- until they reach the policeman's destination, a diamond-mining camp, where the miners' prejudice forces the native woman into a marginal, inferior status. Once the policeman has taken care of the corrupt mining boss in a manner beyond the laws of the country, he leaves, and the woman follows him along his way out again. He knows he cannot take her back to the city with him, and not having any real respect for the native Brazilians himself, his solution to handling the problem of an unwanted female companion is not any different than his solution to handling an unwanted, corrupt mining boss. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
