Visual effects specialists Greg and Colin Strause both make their feature directorial debut with this no-holds-barred monster mash that attempts to set itself apart from the 2004 Paul W.S. Anderson original by serving as a straight-up sci-fi horror scarefest. The aliens (and a predator) have landed on planet Earth, and small-town America is about to become the scene of an epic interstellar showdown. As these two breeds of cosmic killers clash in the small-town streets Gunnison, CO, the locals are sent running for their lives. This is a dull, by-the-book actioner whose only merit is a good performance by actress Akosua Busia, later nominated for an Academy Award for her work in The Color Purple. When Karen, the daughter of a well-heeled businessman (Troy Donahue) has been swallowed up by a religious cult, her father hires ex-cop Joe Wong (Leo Fong) to bring her back safe and sound. Before tackling this assignment, Wong spends a lot of time in a Darwinian process of natural selection, weeding out the tough guys who will go in with him to rescue Karen. The Perfect Witness is New York restaurant owner Aidan Quinn. After witnessing a mob murder, Quinn does his civic duty by reporting the incident to the authorities. This plunks Quinn into the middle of a power play between the DA and ambitious US attorney Brian Dennehy, who won't let up on the case until he can prove that the murder is part of a larger conspiracy. When mob thugs injure Quinn's son, he asks to be allowed not to testify, whereupon Dennehy jails the poor fellow for obstructing justice. When two bumbling businessmen, Larry Wilson (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard Parker (Jonathan Silverman), alert their boss, Bernie Lomax (Terry Kiser), to an expensive discrepancy in the company books, he invites them to his home on the beach with the intent to have them murdered.
