Brazilian director Julio Bressane directs this religious biography on the life and work of Saint Jerome, the monk who first translated the Bible into Latin. Set both in the desert and in the posh confines of the Vatican, Jerome (Everaldo Pontes) agonizes over which Latin word would best fit its Hebrew counterpart. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Legendary Brazilian director Carlos Diegues recasts the tragic myth of Orpheus in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. Orfeu de Conceicao is the most famous samba player in Brazil, and one of the most respected members of the neighborhood of Carioca Hill, a labyrinth of dirty streets and quickly made shacks ruthlessly controlled by drug lord Lucinho. Young Orfeu, though, lives a gilded life. He has his pick of a bevy of local beauties, children worship him, and the corrupt police will not harass him like the others in the area. During the run-up to Carnival, his world is turned upside down with the appearance of the gorgeous Euridice, who has just moved from the remote untamed hinterland of the Amazon. In spite of her indifference to samba music and her initial reluctance, the two soon fall passionately in love. Unfortunately, the violence of their surroundings threatens to overwhelm them. When Lucinho takes a liking to Euridice and challenges his former childhood friend, Orfeu is forced to endure a brutal test for his love. Orfeu was screened at the 1999 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Using comedy and melodrama this film reflects upon the filmmaking process as it follows a young woman's attempts to create an avant garde film. Alice has just lost her father, and just divorced her husband David. She wants to make a film on artist Marcel Duchamp and trace his imaginary trip to Brazil. But first she must find financial backing and a leading man. She finds the latter in Antonio, a musician. She has no luck finding money until she becomes involved with the Baron, a drug trafficker. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In an avant-garde onslaught that involves literary readings from authors as diverse as Thomas Mann and Brazilian writer Guimaraes Rosa, director Caetano Veloso creates an engaging but supremely challenging look at the nature of creativity and free expression. Long commentaries also include thoughts on Wim Wenders's Paris, Texas as well as Fidel Castro and Brazilian cinema. Veloso's collage of dialogue, commentary, and selected scenic locations serves as an illustration of his own viewpoints and philosophies. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
