Fima Noveck Movies
A talented film editor who earned the nickname "the film doctor" for his unique ability to recut foreign films for stateside distribution and salvage films that many dismissed as hopeless, Fima Noveck also wasn't averse to stepping in front of the camera for the occasional supporting performance. Noveck immigrated to New York from Yaroslavl, Russia, in 1947, and after a decade of struggling in the film industry, the ambitious aspiring filmmaker eventually scraped up enough celluloid to shoot the DGA Award-nominated Reflections of New York. In the following decades, editing jobs became more frequent for Noveck, with a move to the West Coast in the 1980s expanding his career as he ran post-production facilities for such notables as Trans World Entertainment and Spelling Films. Some of the dedicated editor's best-known work can be seen in the Lina Wertmüller films Swept Away, Love and Anarchy, and Blood Feud. Minor film roles include appearances in Nixon, The Trouble With Spies, and McHale's Navy. On March 30, 2004, the longtime editor died in Los Angeles following an extended illness. Oliver Stone, the most outspokenly political American filmmaker of the 1980s and '90s, directs this epic-length biography of Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the U.S., who was re-elected by a landslide in 1972, only to resign in disgrace two years later. Taking a non-linear approach, Nixon jumps back and forth between many different periods and events, from Nixon's strict upbringing at the hands of his Quaker mother, through the many peaks and valleys of his political career, to his downfall in the wake of the Watergate scandal. The facts of his life are blended with supposition and speculation to create a portrait that is often critical of the man's policies but displays an unexpected compassion toward his failings as a human being. Policeman-turned-trucker Travis Blackstone (Lorenzo Lamas) is forced to use almost all of his exceptional martial arts skills after his screw-up brother Franklin (Hank Cheyne) begs him to return a fortune in embezzled money from the ruthless Mr. Chang's (Joe Son) money-laundering bank. The hard-driving, ham-fisted action begins when Travis learns that while Franklin claims he only swiped a few hundred thousand bucks, in reality his brother siphoned off five million and invested it in a bogus real estate operation. Appleton Porter (Donald Sutherland) is an inept international secret agent sent by the U.S. to the island of Ibiza in this uneven spy comedy. His mission is to secure the secret recipe for a truth serum to use on enemy agents. Appleton miraculously avoids being killed on several occasions as suspicions point to various hotel guests. Hotel owner Mona Smith (Lucy Gutteridge), Harry Lewis (Ned Beatty), and Mrs. Arkwright (Ruth Gordon) soon make addle-brained Appleton feel that someone, if not everyone, is up to no good. This little aberration of the Sixties was originally released to theaters as The Hallucination Generation. Star George Montgomery does a Timothy Leary act as a charismatic LSD guru (one wonders if Montgomery offers woodworking hints between drug trips). Juvenile lead Danny Stone, upset at his mom, joins Montgomery's cult in Spain and turns on-tunes in-drops out in a biiiiigggg way. Eventually, Stone gets involved in murder--and let that be a lesson to all you other long-haired hippie freaks.
