This dark Swedish comedy-drama is based on director Mats Arehn's memories of his father. The story is told from Arehn's point of view when he was a child. Palle Hagmann, a 1940's Swedish vaudeville singer is popular. He would be really popular were it not for his reputation for lying and cheating. He rationalizes to his son by explaining the different kinds of lies available. He admonishes him that white lies should be saved for the self. Hagmann tells white ones frequently and with increasing regularity; they get him into trouble. Hagmann moves his family around frequently until they finally end up in the South of France attempting to manage a hotel. Despite Hagmann's largely self-created problems, he remains a devout optimist. Arehn's exploration of his father creates a tragic scenario that ultimately culminates in love and forgiveness. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

One particularly successful ploy of his is to take some of the illegal condoms his mother is selling in her tobacco store and use them to power some slingshots he has made, sellling them to neighborhood boys. In this epic historical drama, set in the 10th century, a young Christian man is sent by his Scandinavian superiors to Iceland to assist in the conversion of that island to Christianity. Young Askur is deeply in love with Embla, but he must leave for the remote realm of Iceland on his mission before he can come back and make her his wife. There is much bad blood between those who follow the old ways and those who follow the new, and a strong arm on the side of the Christians is warmly welcomed. This production drew on talent and funding from all over Scandinavia and by local standards was a phenomenally expensive picture, costing around $7 million dollars to make; it did not repay these costs during its Scandinavian release. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther is reputed to have single-handedly instituted the Romantic movement which gave birth to so much music and literature in the nineteenth century. It is also reputed to have sparked an epidemic of suicides similar to the one depicted in the novel. It has been the subject of solemn commentaries since the day it was first published. This Swedish film spoofs both the original story, and the business of filmmaking. In the story, Max Karlsson (Tomas Norstrom) ,a sensitive young writer/director is filming the aforementioned novel, simultaneously suffering the non-stop harassment of his producer and the pangs of his own great tendency to powerful romantic attachments. The final result of his various tribulations is that the director decides to emulate the hero of the novel he has been filming. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
