In 1964, only a few weeks before the Civil Rights Act became law, marking a crucial victory in the struggle for equal rights, Dr. Martin Luther King and his allies from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference staged a series of protests in St. Augustine, FL, a resort community where racial segregation was still the order of the day. After several days of protests that often led to violent retaliation against the demonstrators, several SCLC activists arrived at the Monson Motor Lodge; the motel stated that its swimming pool was to be used by whites only, and in defiance several African-Americans dove in. James Brock, owner of the motel, responded by pouring hydrochloric acid into the water in full view of newsreel cameramen. More than four decades later, filmmaker Jeremy Dean traveled to St. Augustine to examine both the shocking events of the past and what the city is like today. In the documentary Dare Not Walk Alone, Dean interviews James Brock as well as other residents about the 1964 protests, and offers a profile of the city that shows how far St. Augustine has come, and how far it still has to go in terms of real racial equality. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A desperate mother and a bitter counselor each find new hope in the courage and conviction of the other in an inspirational drama from director Julio D. De Los Santos. Letty (Jessi Perez) is a young Latina mother who has been suffering in an abusive relationship for far too long. Now, as a result of her dire situation, child protective services have stepped in to take custody of Letty's children. Upon learning that her only chance to regain custody is to see a court-appointed counselor, Letty agrees to attend sessions with disparate Jewish counselor Dr. Sharon Greene (Mara Monserrat). A highly educated professional who remains unable to bear children despite years of infertility treatment, Dr. Greene has grown into a bitter and resentful woman despite the constant support of her loving husband and her concerned mother Ruthie (Greta DeBofsky). As a young girl Ruthie narrowly escaped a grim fate at the hands of the Nazis, but these days she is afflicted with an illness that is likely to catch up with her sooner rather than later. In the darkest moments of her life Dr. Greene manages to see a beacon of hope in the bravery and wisdom of her ailing mother, a beacon that shines so brightly that it may even reach Letty as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A humble Irish farmer decides that it is high time to move that big old stone in his field that has been there seemingly since the dawn of time. This gory horror film, an adaptation from one of noted British-author Clive Barker's short stories, follows what happens next. No sooner does he move the rock when out rushes an enormous, blood-thirsty pagan demon, Rawhead Rex, who immediately goes berserk and begins biting people left and right. Among the bitten is the son of an American professor of history and anthropology. His father immediately begins researching the angry old god and plotting his demise. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Irish youths Vinnie (Stephen Brennan) and Arthur (Eamon Morrissey) fight their ongoing boredom by running a video print of Elvis Presley's Roustabout. If you've seen that film, you'll remember that at one point, Elvis participates in "The Wall of Death," a dangerous cylindrical motorcycle stunt. Suddenly inspired, Vinnie and Arthur set about constructing their own Wall of Death. Supplies are costly, but the boys are benumbed to reality by their dreams of fame and fortune. Entering the picture (and foredooming the project) is con artist Boots (Niall Toibin), who claims to be an American showman bent upon giving Vinnie and Arthur a spectacular TV showcase. Like the later The Commitments, Eat the Peach deftly blends traditional sour-faced Irish pragmatism with pie-in-the-sky idealism. This time, however, there's no blarney: Eat the Peach is based on a true story! Privately financed in England and Ireland, the film earned good American bookings thanks to the sponsorship of filmmaker Jonathan Demme. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
