Colometa (Silvia Munt) is an average housewife with two children to care for in the late 1930's, as the Spanish Civil War is starting and her husband goes off to fight. She had been an ordinary woman working in a shop when she met the lively carpenter who married her, and their life together was without major problems. But now she is forced to raise her children under straitened circumstances, and after her husband dies, her life undergoes another major change as she marries for the second time. Underneath Colometa's acquiescent, forebearing exterior must lie just a few discontents, a few unrealized dreams - but they never surface as she blithely moves from one episode in her life to another. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Confusion seems to settle over this drama like dust on a polished surface, until the layers are so thick that nothing is seen clearly any more. Andrés (José Sacristán) goes back to Spain from Mexico because a lawyer has sent for him. Andrés has inherited an enormous piece of property -- an old mansion of a house -- and although his half-brother offers him a good sum of money for the structure, Andrés hesitates. He wants to know more about the circumstances of his father's death which happened when Andrés was six; he is also becoming infatuated with the lawyer's daughter, and some men are threatening him -- men who may or may not be hired by his half-brother. In the end, Andrés fares better than the plot itself. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In a well-acted historical drama about clashes between opposite ends of the economic and cultural spectrum, a literal witch hunt in a Basque village sets orthodox religion against pagan beliefs, feudal lords against the impoverished peasantry, abusive men against defenseless women, and in some ways, Spaniards against Basques. The witches are female and from the lower classes, the persecutors are wealthy white Christians. The story revolves around Garazi (Silvia Munt) whose grandmother is burned at the stake when convicted by the Spanish inquisitor of being a witch, something that brings Garazi under suspicion and eventually into prison. She is tortured in prison and raped by her rejected suitor, the vicious son of a local landlord. While Garazi is suffering her own pain, a struggle on a much broader scale is in the offing. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The Basque country lies around the Gulf of Biscay, and one of its cities, Bilboa, is the setting for this turgid story of political intrigue. The Basque separatist movement has always been a point of contention in Spanish politics and provides the shady backdrop for this story about Lucas (Omero Antonutti), a Basque newspaper reporter who comes home after a long period in Argentina only to land in the middle of a conflict. He is badly beaten up but continues on to get a job with a newspaper unafraid of reporting on the factions that are a part of the Basque political scene. His lack of temerity, if not discretion, is certain to get him into even more trouble. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This engaging drama is about an introspective, shy Swiss journalist. Told in a series of flashbacks, Hans (Jurg Low) remembers when he went to Spain to cover the nation's reaction to the fascist Franco's death. Hans' own father had gone to Spain as a part of the International Brigade, and while there he met and fell in love with a beautiful Spanish woman. Now Hans' father has died, and while Hans is in Spain, he meets Margareta (Silvia Munt), the daughter of the woman his father had loved. He also meets an attractive Frenchwoman (Aurore Clement) and is drawn to her. It is these relationships and their denouement that come back to him seven years after this chapter in his life had ended. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This eccentric retelling of a classic short novel by Henry James was so shabbily produced that one trade reviewer (for Variety) rather insultingly suggested that it was made solely as a means for receiving federal grant money set aside especially for the production of Catalan-language films. At least two earlier films with the same story have been made, the (1981) Aspern by Eduardo de Grigorio, and in 1973, The Aspern Affair by Burt Brinkerhoff. In the story, a famous writer has died, leaving behind a completed but unpublished manuscript, and several individuals have plans for the papers' final disposition. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In 1939, Ramon (Jacques Penot) was a young man, caught up in his Barcelona family's involvement on the Republic side in the brutal Spanish Civil War. He and his family fled into exile ahead of Franco's troops. Now it is many years later, and he has come back to see how his old homestead fared in the intervening years. The only person he can find who is able to remember those years clearly is his family's old butler Claudio (Vittorio Gassman). This film is a sequel to the 1975 film by director Jaime Camino, Largas Vacaciones del 36. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

A young boy's fascination with the deaths of several people close to him spark his growth from boyhood in this Spanish drama from writer-director Montxo Armendáriz. The hometown of nine-year-old Javi (Andoni Erburu and his brother Juan (Alvaro Nagone) is a rural farming village in the early 1960s. Their father, they are told, accidentally killed himself while cleaning his gun, and the room where the death occurred has been declared off limits to the boys. Juan tells his younger brother that ghostly sounds can be heard in the room, but when Javi sneaks in and hears the unearthly moans, it's really the sound of their mother making love with their uncle Tio (Carmelo Gomez). Javi's friend Carlos (Inigo Garces) has also suffered the loss of a parent, his mother, who committed suicide. Javi and Carlos sneak into a haunted house, also rumored to be a site where spectral sounds can be heard, and they overhear something in the basement. His adventures inspire Javi to question the deaths of his father and Carlos' mother, leading to a revelation. Secretos del Corazon (1997) was the winner of four Goya Awards, as well as an Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Lucia (Silvia Munt) is a woman in her early forties who moves back to the neighborhood where she grew up, taking over a house her grandparents once owned. As a dog is abandoned one snowy winter night near a local bus stop, three characters awaiting the bus do their best to ignore the situation. Thus begins Judith Colell's film 53 dias de Invierno (53 Winter Days). The film subsequently delves into the life of each passenger, and becomes a trio of stories on conflict - the first psychological, the second emotional, and the third social. Because Colell recounts the tales one-after-another but never intersects or overlaps the narratives per se, her film becomes a foray into the hidden stories that lurk behind the eyes of three strangers, whom we might come across on any random street corner - and who only happen, cosmically, to be sharing the same bus stop at the same moment but may never know one another. In the psychological segment, we meet Mila (Mercedes Sampietro), a local teacher reeling from an assault at the hands of a student, who has taken a yearlong sabbatical to recover; the arc of her story involves her gradual attainment of self-assertion and courage. Segment number two - the segment on emotional conflict - follows Valeria (Aina Clotet), a cellist immersed in an adulterous relationship with her married professor, Hugo (Joaquim de Almeida). The instructor decides to break off the relationship but sends his wife to do the dirty work; meanwhile, Valeria's mother (Silvia Munt) sits at home and struggles to contend with her husband's abandonment of her. And in the third segment (which pertains to social conflict), married security guard Celso (Brendemuhl), struggles to make ends meet - a goal that looms impossible as he discovers his wife, Angela's, (Maria Pau Pigem) expectancy of twins. He foolhardily tries to pocket a necklace from the department store where he works, as a gift for his wife, but is promptly discovered, fired, and thrown out onto the streets - where the terror of confessing his misdeeds to Angela keeps him from heading home. Gemma Ventura penned the script. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Four years after cresting the pinnacle of cinematic acclaim with his comic festival hit Smoking Room (2002), Spanish writer-director Roger Gual returns with a sophomore outing, Remake (2006). Though this film will inevitably earn critical comparisons to such prior efforts as The Big Chill and Peter's Friends for its ensemble-in-a-house setup, Gual - unlike the directors of those prior efforts- aims straight for dark, multilayered, probing drama on themes of intergenerational disillusionment. The story concerns a tightly-knit group of four 1960s leftist radicals (two men and two women) who formed a hippie commune circa 1968-9, in a Catalunya farmhouse, and proudly upheld a "nontraditional" parental approach that shunned discipline. Over the forty years that followed, these onetime "revolutionaries" paired off, got married, raised their kids and settled into affluent, upper-crust bourgeois lifestyles. They now gather for a reunion in the same farmhouse, accompanied by their grown children, and by the fifth member of their old clique, Max (Mario Paolucci). As the sole remaining resident of the farmhouse, the wholly countercultural Max now plans to sell the property. As the weekend unfurls, the parents begin to project old super-8 movies of themselves from forty years prior, and must simultaneously confront the loss of their 1960s idealism and the ill-adjusted natures of their children, who blame their parents' non-conformist ways for their innate unhappiness and inability to succeed in the everyday world. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
