The Ture Sventon detective novels and stories by Ake Holmberg have delighted generations of Swedish youngsters. This somewhat stylized film takes the private detective on a search for a famous horse stolen from the circus. The clever language of the novel this film is based on enlivens narrated sections. The filmmakers chose to minimize the magical aspects of the novel and to present the action in a larger-than-life manner harking back to silent films. In this melodrama, Rita (Lena Carlsson) is a girl about to turn 17, and she is exploring the world around her and, more particularly, her feminine powers over men. It is summer, and she and her wealthy parents are spending the holidays at their seaside resort home. Rita discovers that she has some romantic feelings for her father, but soon tires of that game, and takes up with a van driver after fending off the attentions of a more "suitable" partner. Meanwhile, she and her girlfriend visit a carnival, play tennis, etc. Aside from her parents, her other older relatives are all semi-tragic types, much given to drink, suicide attempts, and shooting birds. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Some middle-class dreamers sell their homes to build a boat that will allow them to sail off to an unspecified paradise. The ship is wrecked before the maiden voyage, and the men lie to their wives to cover-up the debacle. The men decide to steal a vessel in order to come up with the proposed dreamboat in this uneven comedy highlighted by the performances of Philip Zanden and Peter Andersson. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

In this tour-de-force, an amusing and successful low-budget crime-comedy, Tobbe (Gosta Ekman) gains consciousness in his bed one morning with a world-class hangover, and groaning, realizes that there is a woman sleeping next to him. In pops Bertil (Sten Ljunggren), who was also at the party but is much less the worse for the wear-and-tear of the evening's celebrations. Bertil is a doctor, and when he notices the woman he checks her inert form out and quickly discovers that she is not sleeping, she is dead. Now the two buddies have a serious problem on their hands, and as they exchange lies about what their relationships to the dead woman really were, the lies start slipping and sliding until the truth comes out -- and the two men have to figure out how to dispense of the corpse. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
