For decades, the name of Enver Hoxha (1908-1985) aligned itself with terror in the minds of Albanian citizens. A psychopathic ruler whose calling card involved permanently separating family members from one another and incarcerating nationals for marrying non-indigenes, Hoxha cast a dark and oppressive shadow over the nation. Adela Peeva's harrowing documentary Razvod Po Albanski explores Hoxha's legacy by relaying the individual accounts of children estranged from their families via the leader's doings, and the testimonies of ex-convicts interrogated and imprisoned for years on end thanks to Hoxha. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

French director Elie Chouraqui adapts the novel of the same name into this drama, that, although set in 1991, became tragically topical in the weeks before its release due to the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Andie MacDowell stars as Sarah, a photo editor for Newsweek and the happily married wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Harrison Lloyd (David Strathairn). Harrison has been reconsidering his career of covering the world's war zone "hot spots" in order to spend more time with his family, and is accused by his colleague, Kyle (Adrien Brody), of playing it too safe in his risky profession. Harrison elects to accept one more combat assignment to cover the simmering tensions in Croatia, a conflict that quickly erupts into a full-scale, genocidal Civil War. Informed that Harrison is believed to have been killed in the fighting, Sarah refuses to accept her husband's death and becomes convinced that she's seen him, alive, in a news broadcast. She travels to Croatia on a quest to find him, and is eventually aided by Kyle, as well as two of Harrison's other colleagues, Yeager (Elias Koteas) and Stevenson (Brendan Gleeson). The group, armed with cameras instead of weapons, witnesses the horrors and atrocities unfolding in the region, while tracing the elusive path of Harrison, who may well be dead already. Harrison's Flowers was distributed by Universal Focus, the art house division of Universal Pictures that previously released Mulholland Drive (2001) and Billy Elliott (2000). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Stevan is the long-prayed-for male heir of a rural Yugoslavian family, which previously had seen the birth of girl after girl and was thus considered to be specially cursed. In fact, the curse was felt to encompass the whole community, so that it suffered a damaging drought. Thus, the rains that came when Stevan's birth was announced were cause for much communal celebration. Of course, Stevan is not actually a boy, but another girl baby who was raised as a boy. He/she is a "virginia," for her family has followed the ancient custom of designating a girl-child as a boy to avoid the heavy social censure which comes with having all-girl offspring. Now she is approaching adolescence, and her peculiar situation is, to put it mildly, rather confusing for her. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In a plot that combines Mary Shelley's mad Dr. Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, two yellow journalism reporters, Jack and Gil (Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley, Jr.) head off to a castle in Transylvania. The intrepid duo is out to hunt down a story that proves Frankenstein's "monster" is still alive and sparking. What they find is an appropriately demented Dr. Malavaqua and his monstrous creations. Tame stuff for the hardcore groupie, this intended spoof falls a tad short of funny. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This weak story about a country oaf who goes after a con artist because the guy ran off with his girlfriend is the occasion for several sexual encounters between the innocent country boy and the bad women in the city -- though in the end, the exhausted fellow realizes that an honest and pure life is the best. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
