The habitually pessimistic Ray (Ray Romano) is convinced that he will not win the Sports Writer of the Year Award. Debra (Patricia Heaton) tries to persuade Ray to adopt a more optimistic outlook on life. This he does--and before long, Ray is the only member of his family who continually looks upon the brighter side of things. Good news? Hardly! Now that Ray is so irritatingly upbeat, the rest of the family is convinced that he has become incurably swell-headed. ~ All Movie Guide

When their cable TV goes out, Ray (Ray Romano) and the family play a game of "Scruples". Inevitably, an argument breaks out as to who is the most "honest" player in the family. This becomes a moot point when it is learned that Frank (Peter Boyle) had hooked up the cable box illegally. Jon Manfrellotti, here cast as the pivotal "cable guy," would later become a semi-regular on Everybody Loves Raymond in the role of Gianni. ~ All Movie Guide

Just when Debra is about to give in, Ray's whole family shows up for the traditional unwrapping of the gifts (not to mention the Egg Florentine). Prolific cartoon voiceover actress Christine Cavanaugh (Rugrats) appears on-screen in this episode. ~ All Movie Guide

He meets a really beautiful woman, Amanda (Gail Kappler Rosella), and gets to photograph her and fall in love with her. When she goes off about her business, he thinks that is the end of the story. Just as he learns he is about to be evicted from his shabby digs, Amanda shows up and reveals herself to be quite rich, with good connections in the art and publishing worlds, and his life takes a turn for the better. Except, of course, that this new world is revealed as being shallow and exploitative, and Amanda is shown to have some flaws as well. This comedy is set in Hollywood in 1961, where a group of young men join the National Guard in an attempt to escape Vietnam. The men basically do nothing while on supposed weekend duty until they get a visit from the Army, which threatens to ship them out on active duty unless they shape up. Their solution is to hire a troupe of actors to portray convincing soldiers, put on a stage show to impress the Army officers, and make sure that enough winsome nurses are around to satisfy the proverbial lecherous tendencies of a certain colonel. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
