Loosely based on the 1958 comedy The Reluctant Debutante starring Sandra Dee, the family-friendly comedy What a Girl Wants features popular Nickelodeon teen star Amanda Bynes in her first feature-starring performance after her debut in Big Fat Liar. She plays teenager Daphne Reynolds, who lives in New York City with her musician mother, Libby (Kelly Preston). After she turns 17, Daphne is undecided about her future, so she takes off by herself to London in search of her father. She immediately meets cute musician Ian (Oliver James) before sneaking in to her father's estate to surprise him. He turns out to be Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth), a fabulously wealthy aristocrat who doesn't even know that she exists. He had met her mother in Morocco and the two were married in a tribal ceremony. Upon their return to England, she left him and went back to the U.S. without ever revealing that she was pregnant. The uptight Henry is already flustered by his campaign for election, advised by doting aide Alistair Payne (Jonathan Pryce). His no-nonsense fiancée, Glynnis (Anna Chancellor), and her bratty daughter, Clarissa (Christina Cole), are threatened by Daphne's presence, thinking that she will hurt Henry's political aspirations by causing a scandal. However, the family matriarch (Eileen Atkins) takes a liking to her and she soon finds herself trying to liven things up at several stuffy aristocratic parties. Meanwhile, the evil Glynnis and Clarissa conspire against her by trying to sabotage her appearance, leading up to the conclusion at Daphne's very own coming-out party. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Ultimate manly man Arnold Schwarzenegger learns what it's like to be an expectant mother in director Ivan Reitman's high-concept comedy. Schwarzenegger plays Dr. Hess, a medical researcher working on a revolutionary drug to help mothers carry endangered infants to term. When government regulations prevent Dr. Hess from testing the drug through normal channels, his partner Dr. Arbogast (Danny DeVito) develops an unorthodox solution: they will steal a female egg and implant it in Hess, who will carry the child himself. Predictably, much of the subsequent humor centers on the incongruous sight of the muscular Schwarzenegger undergoing the trials and tribulations of pregnancy, from morning sickness to labor pains. Emma Thompson returns to her comic roots and provides romantic interest as an incorrigibly clumsy but intelligent scientist who catches on to Hess' deception. Reitman, Schwarzenegger, and DeVito had previously had a hit with Twins (1988), which revolved around a similarly ludicrous medical premise, but they failed to repeat that film's success here, as audiences largely ignored the film and reviewers criticized the humor as disappointingly obvious. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

The American Civil War divided the nation and produced profound and lasting changes in the lives of its people. The issues and emotions of the times are reflected in this collection of songs from the era. The longing of slaves for freedom, the defiance of the South for a dying way of life, and the cry for the Union preserved of the North were expressed in music. Folk singers including Judy Collins, Waylon Jennings, Ritchie Havens, and Kathy Mattea interpret music of the period, from the Spoon River Anthology to Underground Railroad coded message songs. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide
Featuring Bill Moyers as host, this PBS program examines the popularity and influence of the enduring English Christian hymn "Amazing Grace." Written by former slave trader-turned-minister John Newton and first published in 1779, the hymn has been popular across generations and has been adapted to many types of music, from country & western to gospel to bag pipes. Newton set his words to music, which this program speculates may have originated from a song he heard African slaves singing. The program includes singers Judy Collins, Jessye Norman, Johnny Cash, Jean Ritchie, and the Boys Choir of Harlem singing various renditions and discussing the helpful impact of the hymn in the lives of many people, including alcoholics and convicts. ~ Steve Blackburn, All Movie Guide

Part of the Muppet Video Series, which features episodes starring the beloved felt puppets, Muppet Video Series: Children's Song and Stories With the Muppets compiles new material with clips from previously aired Muppet Show episodes. Kids join Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Animal, and the gang for a day of storytelling and song-singing. Guest stars Julie Andrews, Charles Aznavour, John Denver, Judy Collins, and Twiggy help make the party hop. ~ Betsy Boyd, All Movie Guide
Children's Songs & Stories with the Muppets was culled from some of the best moments of the popular syndicated TV weekly The Muppet Show. Most of the sketches spotlight the star Muppets Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear et. al. There are few of the series' celebrity guests, an omission evidently made to avoid residual costs. The best moment is an all-infant band bursting forth with a rendition of "Tuxedo Junction". This 56-minute compilation can generally be found in the "Family Viewing" section of your local video store, and rightly so; like all of the best Muppet material, the tape transcends age boundaries and can be enjoyed with equal fervor by both children and adults. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Rare filmclips of folksinger Woody Guthrie at work and at play provide the highlights of this 74-minute documentary. Hard Travelin' places Guthrie's musical contributions within the context of their times, utilizing harrowing footage of the devastation wreaked by the Depression and the Dust Bowl. It goes without saying, perhaps, that Arlo Guthrie is called upon to assess his father, both as an artist and a man. Also appearing to perform and converse are Joan Baez, Hoyt Axton, Judy Collins and Pete Seeger. Woody Guthrie is the ideal "warm-up" for the 1976 Guthrie biopic Bound for Glory. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Singer/songwriter Judy Collins and filmmaker Jill Godmilow were the creative forces behind Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman. This 58-minute documentary zeroes in on the life and work of symphony conductor Antonia Brico. The film traces Brico's struggle to overcome the "good old boy" sexual bias in her profession. Her uplifting story is enhanced tenfold by precious backstage footage of Brico in action. Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman was well distributed on the college campus circuit, then became a staple of arts-oriented cable TV services. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Frank D. Gilroy's Pulitzer-winning "kitchen sink" theatrical piece The Subject Was Roses was given a no-frills film transference in 1968. Martin Sheen and Jack Albertson re-create their stage roles as a returning serviceman and his alcoholic father. Patricia Neal takes over from the play's Irene Dailey as Nettie Cleary, Timmy's (Sheen) overly protective mother, long at odds with husband John (Albertson) over his drinking. Mother and Father try to put on a facade of happiness for the benefit of their son, but soon the three of them are squabbling again, just as if the boy had never been away. With the exception of adding a few extraneous characters, the film version of The Subject Was Roses is essentially the same as its 1964 Broadway counterpart. The film helped establish the career of Martin Sheen, launched a whole new dramatic career for Jack Albertson, and represented a triumphant comeback for Patricia Neal, who'd recently recovered from a debilitating stroke. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This documentary, sponsored by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, chronicles the history of the garment workers from 1900 to 1964. Director Harold Mayer uses old photos and newsreel footage combined with more recent film to tell of the history of the union. Folks songs are included in the film to explain the political and historical changes of the union. The film depicts management unfavorably and does not gloss over the violence that occurred during labor strikes. Of course, no mention is made about any "alleged" ties between the industry and organized crime. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Charismatic Welsh crooner Tom Jones hosted his popular musical variety series This is Tom Jones on ABC, from February 1969 through January 1971. This Is Tom Jones: Christmas presents, back to back, the two hour-long yuletide-themed episodes of that series, broadcast in December 1969 and December 1970, respectively. Numerous musical performers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Collins, The Treorchy Male Choir and Jones himself, appear - with a combination of holiday and non-holiday numbers; Rudolf Nureyev dances to the Nutcracker Suite; and the show's four-person improvisational comedy troupe, The Ace Trucking Company, performs a humorous sketch. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
