Allan Collins Movies

For reasons best known to himself and his agent, Italian actor Luciano Pigozzi felt he'd go farther in his profession with an Anglo-Saxon stage name. Thus Pigozzi woke up one morning as Alan Collins. Among Collins' cinematic landmarks of the '60s and '70s were Secret Agent Fireball (1966), director Mario Bava's Baron Blood (1972), Yor: The Hunter of the Future (1983) and Code Name: Wildgeese (1986)--the last two films directed by another Man With Two Names, Anthony M. Dawson (aka Antonio Margheriti). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Although ostensibly set in the future after a nuclear holocaust has destroyed the ozone layer, and much of everything else, this feeble sci-fi road film has gangs on motorbikes or driving 1,000-year-old cars from the 1970s in perfect running order, at war for water, a rare commodity. On the one hand, there is Alien (Robert Jannucci) and his female friend Trash (Alicia Moro), and the bionic child Tommy (Luca Ventantini) who are pitted against the evil bikers headed by Crazy Bull (apparently not meant to be a reference to the film). The brave trio join up with Papillon for awhile, an ex-astronaut with expertise in fixing old cars and broken bionic parts. Once set in good working order, the trio now has to take on Crazy Bull and the bad guys, one of which is actually a really nasty female. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A fantasy-adventure story in the manner of The Raiders of the Lost Ark, this particular lost Ark is located in Turkey at the site of the temple of the Sun God, where the legendary hero Gilgamesh lies buried. Inside, Gilgamesh keeps company with a jeweled sword that is a source of power for whoever owns it. Rick Spear (David Warbeck) is a safecracker who has been sent to open the temple and retrieve the sword -- no easy task, since if anyone tampers with the temple's locks, the entire building is designed to self-destruct. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This Italian-Turkish co-production helmed by genre veteran Antonio Margheriti (using the pseudonym "Anthony M. Dawson") was cobbled together from a four-part science-fiction miniseries shown on Italian television. In prehistoric times, the muscular Yor (Reb Brown in a loincloth) saves his cave-babe (Corinne Clery) from a dinosaur just before they get zapped into the future to battle bad guys in the familiar desolate wasteland. Genre stalwart John Steiner (Caligole) and the ubiquitous Luciano Pigozzi co-star with Carol Andre. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

This Vietnam-era drama (lensed in the Philippines) stars Timothy Brent as a Green Beret. Attempting to rescue a wounded soldier, Brent is himself seriously injured and left to die by heartless commanding officer Tony Marsina. But Brent isn't about to die just yet: he spends several grueling days hacking his way through the jungle, for the express purpose of beating Marsina to a pulp. Facing a court martial, Brent escapes to the wilds of Cambodia, where he determines to live out the rest of his life. Tornado director Anthony Dawson (Antonio Margheriti) is best known to American audiences for his horror and spaghetti-western efforts of the 1960s. Filmed in 1983, Tornado finally hit the screens two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this routine action-adventure film patterned after the trend-setting Raiders of the Lost Ark, a GI is requested by the Allies in World War II to come back to the Philippines after the war has ended and find the Golden Cobra, a sacred image worshipped by the Awoks (predating George Lucas' Ewoks by one year). When he does return, the ex-GI, Bob (David Warbeck), is not alone. He has two allies in the form of June (Almanta Suska) and her uncle (Alan Collins), who are searching for June's twin sister, April, lost in the jungle many years earlier. Anyone who has seen Raiders is likely to stay one step ahead of the action. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Another horrible horror from Italy, which undoubtedly marked the absolute nadir of Rossano Brazzi's career in the wake of South Pacific. Brazzi plays the deranged Dr. Frankenstein (the credits list him as a Count -- someone must have gotten their monsters mixed) who, like many Frankensteins of yore, endeavors to build an enormous humanoid monster; this one has been given the more biblical name "Goliath." Again, as is the case with so many of his mad-doc brethren, Frank has failed to plan ahead and secure a proper brain for the creature's empty cranium (finding one for the director might have been a better idea). He assigns this task to his somewhat less-than-competent servants, including a dwarf named Genz (Michael Dunn). Believe it or not, the operation does not come off as smoothly as planned, and Genz is exiled from the castle. Miffed, the disgruntled fellow plots revenge against his ex-boss, enlisting the aid of a Neanderthal man named "Ook" (credited under the quaint pseudonym "Boris Lugosi"), who likes to wear jogging shorts. None of this really makes any sense, as it serves only as a vehicle for abundant female nudity and plentiful gore. Also known as House of Freaks and released to video as Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

This above-average horror film concerns a young couple (Antonio Cantafora, Elke Sommer) who manage to revive a cruel sorceror-Baron (Joseph Cotten) from the 1500s. Posing as a cripple, the Baron assimilates back into society and buys back his old castle, where he begins torturing and murdering innocent locals in his dungeon. Veteran filmmaker Mario Bava's direction is assured, and Euro-horror buffs will enjoy the cast, which includes Massimo Girotti ("Terence Hill" of spaghetti western fame), Luciano Pigozzi, Umberto Raho, and young Nicoletta Elmi (Profondo Rosso). ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Rosso Segno Della Folia, an Italian horror film written, directed and photographed by Mario Bava, is the bloody story of an impotent man who turns to murder to vent his frustrations. The designer and owner of a fashion design business (Stephen Forsyth), frustrated with his own sexual failure, murders the new brides who have modelled his fashions. When he decides to murder his wife, she becomes the ghost who will not leave him alone. Director Bava, who began his career as a cinematographer, while directing mostly low-budget horror films, has become a cult figure among some fans and critics who admire his unique and beautiful visual style and his often very amusing exaggeration of the cliches of the genre. Rosso Segno Della Folia, released in the United States as Hatchet for a Honeymoon is not the best of Mario Bava's work, but this above-average horror film is a must see for those who love the genre and admire stylish horror films. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

The action in A Big Hand for the Little Lady centers around a high-stake poker game. The participants include some of the wealthiest men in the West (among them Jason Robards Jr., Kevin McCarthy, Charles Bickford and Paul Ford). Into this rarefied atmosphere trudges impoverished farmer Henry Fonda, who despite the protests of his wife Joanne Woodward plunks down his last dollars to join the game. Halfway through the proceedings, Fonda falls ill. With quiet desperation, Woodward sits down daintily at the table and says in a firm voice, "Gentlemen, how do you play this game?" End of story? Not by a long shot! This O. Henry-style shaggy dog story is based on a Dupont Show of the Week TV presentation Big Deal at Laredo. Keep an eye out for two movie veterans in bit parts: silent screen comic Chester Conklin and 1930's leading lady Mae Clarke. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
