Middle-aged Esperanza (Adriana Roel) has a mute son, two daughters, and an abusive husband. Esperanza and her friend Nicolasa (Angelica Aragon) recall past dreams and desires, before they were confronted by economic realities. Begun in 1987, this film was halted by a different incoming administration at IMCINE (Mexican Institute of Cinematography) but eventually completed in 1994. Shown at the 1998 Guadalajara Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

In the folklore of the children in this dark fantasy, fairies are the traditional enemies of evil, and the two aspiring witches in this story want to be evil. Told entirely from a child's perspective (so that adults are never shown in their entirety but usually appear as a miscellaneous jumble of arms and legs), this story explores the girls' search for a poison to use against the fairies and which will enhance their own evil powers. Dreams and nightmares amplify the story and help the viewer understand why each child is deliberately seeking out this dark path. This unusual drama won five Ariel awards, Mexico's equivalent for the Oscar. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

aka: It's my Life -- El Noa Noa 2 This shallow sequel to the 1979 film on the early stages of Alberto Aguilera's musical career continues the story of the singer's mistaken incarceration and glimpses of where his career would go after he is released from jail. As this biographical drama opens, Aguilera (known by his stage name of Juan Gabriel) is framed for a robbery he never committed and is sent to prison. While in prison he entertains the inmates with his music and songs, and the "dreams" he has of his future take up the rest of the time. These sequences introduce excerpts from his successful future and alleviate the time he has to spend in jail. Letters home to mom lie about where he is, since his adoration of his mother would not allow him to tell her the truth about his arrest and conviction, no matter how undeserved. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A small group of shipwrecked people find themselves in danger on a deserted island in this engaging adventure story based on a book by Emilio Salgari. After a sailor (Gonzalo Lora) is caught trying to steal some gold and jewels on the passenger liner Liguria, a fight starts that leads to an accidental fire, and the ship then explodes and sinks. Only four adults and three children manage to escape, landing on a deserted island that will ultimately provide them with enough food and fresh water to survive. Unknown to them, the crooked sailor who started it all and a captive he brought with him have landed on the opposite side of the island. It is only a matter of time before a confrontation happens -- meanwhile, the thief is the only one who knows where he buried the treasure he brought with him from the sunken ship.

Produced on a grand scale, the Mexican Talpa relates the simple story of two brothers. The older of the siblings, Tanilo (Victor Manuel Mendoza) is a well-to-do family man; the other, Estaban (Jamie Fernandez), is one step above a wastrel. When Tanilo is felled by illness, Estaban is forced to take over the family's blacksmith business. He also inaugurates a romance with Tanilo's attractive young wife Juana (Lilia Prado). Punishment is eventually doled out in a manner which suggests that God Himself is exacting retribution on the adulterous couple. Originally released at 87 minutes, Talpa was pared down to 73 minutes for American consumption. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
