The first episode of season three finds Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in a large city, waitressing in a diner under her middle name, Anne. She is depressed and heartbroken over the events that took place at the end of her junior year (see "Becoming, Part 1" and "Becoming, Part 2"). A homeless girl named Lily (Julia Lee), formerly Chantarelle, recognizes Buffy as the girl who saved her from vampires (see "Lie to Me"). Lily pleads for Buffy's help in finding her missing boyfriend, Ricky. Buffy reluctantly agrees and soon finds the preternatuarlly aged corpse of Ricky, along with other old people, bewildered and homeless. Her investigation leads to a seemingly innocuous blood bank that just so happens to moonlight as a portal to a demon dimension. Buffy and Lily unintentionally enter the demon world -- where teens are slave workers and a day in our time is years in the demon world. Meanwhile, back in Sunnydale, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) is overjoyed to discover that Oz (Seth Green) is the smartest senior ever forced to repeat a grade. When Michael Crichton wrote his best-selling thriller Rising Sun, he wrote the character of hero John Connor with Sean Connery in mind. For Philip Kaufman's film version of the novel, Sean Connery, needless to say, fits seamlessly into the role of a legendary police detective who is an expert in Japanese culture. The story takes place in the towering office building of the Japanese Nakamoto Corporation in Los Angeles, who are negotiating a deal with Microcon, an American electronics firm. During a gala held one night in the Nakamoto offices, the body of a woman, Cheryl Lynn Austin (Tatjana Patitz) is found murdered in the main conference room. Arriving quickly on the scene is high-amped police lieutenant Tom Graham (Harvey Keitel), who oozes hatred for anything Japanese from every pore. When he has trouble getting cooperation from the Nakatomo executives, Graham calls in Web Smith (Wesley Snipes), a Special Services liaison, and John Connor (Connery), a man well-versed in Japanese culture and traditions. Together they form a team as they investigate the crime. Connor questions computer video expert Jingo (Tia Carrere), who works on a security system computer disc that captures the killer's identity. Imagine the astonishment of Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) when she picks up a newspaper and reads that she has been killed in a Texas car accident! In truth, the dead woman was Marge Allen (Jane Withers), arguably the most obsessive member of the Jessica Fletcher Fan Club. While impersonating Jessica, Marge decided to investigate a scandal at a local dog-show, only to perish in the aforementioned "accident." Who do you send after a gang of stump-dumb crooks? Who else but the most intellectually-challenged police force in America, in the sixth installment of the Police Academy series. The Wilson Heights Gang, three thieves whose success as criminals is in inverse proportion to their outwardly-displayed intelligence and criminal talent, are managing to terrorize the city in spite of themselves. The increasingly feeble Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) and his much-put-upon second-in-command Capt. Harris (G.W. Bailey) are instructed to bring the crooks to justice; of course, with the Police Academy regulars as their task force, that's much easier said than done. Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey, and Bruce Mahler are on hand once again as the comical cops; Peter Bonerz, a former regular on The Bob Newhart Show, stepped in as director. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
