When the United States Army attempts to turn a microscopic extraterrestrial organism into a powerful military weapon, they inadvertently unleash an apocalyptic hell on Earth. It was one of the most incredible discoveries in the history of mankind; a miniscule life form that possessed the power of life over death. But when the military attempted to engineer a genetically altered version of the organism, it turned on them. The intent was to resurrect fallen soldiers to create the ultimate fighting force, but instead the alien turned the soldiers against one another. Meanwhile, an ambitious high school science teacher named Darren steals the only pure specimen. He's convinced he can discover the secrets of life by studying it, but before he does the alien gets loose, quickly infecting the tenants of his apartment building and creating an unstoppable horde of flesh eating super humans. Now, it's up to Darren and a small band of survivors to prevent the infected from reaching the city, and introducing the alien virus to the general population. Should they fail, it could mean the fall of mankind. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Four college students take a trip to the Florida Everglades in hopes of earning some extra credit for biology class, and instead find themselves locked in a battle to the death against a genetically modified super-eel created by their own professor. They thought they were going out into the field to conduct some standard research on the common eel, but what these students didn't realize is that their scheming professor has been playing God behind closed doors. Now, in order to make it out of the wilderness in one piece, these students will have to capture and kill the perfect predator. But as the hunt gets underway, the desperate group realizes that an old friend of the professor's is also on the hunt for the very same fish. As if dueling scientists weren't enough to contend with, the local sheriff shows up gunning for two escaped convicts who will stop at nothing to ensure they remain free men. As the struggle for survival gets underway, it quickly becomes apparent that mankind may have just moved down a peg on the food chain. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The long-awaited "backstory" for the popular syndicated science-fiction saga Babylon 5 was provided some five years after the series premiered, courtesy of the two-hour movie special Babylon Five: In the Beginning. Set in the year 2278, the film takes a backward glance at the Earth-Minbari war, as seen through the eyes of Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik), now the emperor of Centauri. Detailed for the first time are the tragic beginnings of the war, the involvement of the Minbari Delenn (Mira Furlan), and the death of Dukaht (Raynor Scheine). In addition to featuring most of the series' current regulars, the film also brings back such early defectors as Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) and Ambassador Kosh (Ardwright Chamberlain). As a bonus, Claudia Christian appears unbilled in her familiar role of Lt. Cmdr. Susan Ivanova, here depicted as an 18-year-old civilian. The film was written by series producer J. Michael Straczynski, and later novelized by Peter David. First telecast on January 4, 1978, Babylon 5: In the Beginning launched the two-year association between Babylon 5 and the TNT cable network. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Top-notch action sequences and exciting stunt work highlight this fast-moving thriller. John Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a top agent in the U.S. Marshalls' Witness Protection Program; it's his job to "erase" the pasts of Federal witnesses under his watch and deal with anyone who tries to hurt them. Kruger's latest assignment is to protect Lee Cullen (Vanessa Williams), who while working for a major weapons manufacturing firm discovered evidence that the company was selling new, high-tech weapons to intentional terrorists groups with the cooperation of a faction of enemy agents within the United States government. However, when Kruger discovers that the Witness Protection Program has a rat in the house -- and that rat is his boss, U.S. Marshall Robert Deguerin (James Caan) -- Kruger has to guard his own life while trying to protect Lee's. The supporting cast is highlighted by James Coburn, Robert Pastorelli, and James Cromwell. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Stanley Kubrick's return to filmmaking after a seven-year hiatus, this film crystallizes the experience of the Vietnam War by concentrating on a group of raw Marine volunteers. Based on Gustav Hasford's novel The Short Timers, the film's first half details the volunteers' harrowing boot-camp training under the profane, power-saw guidance of drill instructor Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey, a real-life drill instructor whose performance is one of the most terrifyingly realistic on record). Part two takes place in Nam, as seen through the eyes of the now thoroughly indoctrinated marines. Ironically, Full Metal Jacket was filmed almost entirely in England. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Standing in the way of his/her success is undercover agent Drew Stargrove (George Lazenby), but he does not stand for long.
