Master Hong Kong director Ringo Lam spins this wild genre-bending flick that is equal parts psychodrama, action thriller, caper movie, and ghost story. The film opens with computer designer Ma (Lau Ching-wan) getting kidnapped in a parking structure. His girlfriend Amy Fu (Amy Kwok) informs the police that though he had been jobless for a while and had a lot of debt, he was basically a good egg. Police detective Pit (Tony Leung Kar-wai) soon discovers Ma beaten, bloodied, and dangling upside down from the ceiling of an old abandoned hotel -- one that has been notoriously haunted since the murder-suicide of the owner and his feckless wife. Ma subsequently starts terrifying Amy by behaving like the famous ghost of the hotel. The police, however, suspect that Ma's possession might be a ruse to shield some larger and more nefarious crime. Following closely on the heels of the original Fong Sai Yuk, a martial arts action-comedy featuring the acrobatic skills of martial arts star Jet Li, Fong Sai Yuk 2 offers a similar mixture of adventure, action, and farce. The previous film had concluded with Fong Sai Yuk working with the secret Red Lotus Society to defeat an evil villain; now, Sai Yuk is undergoing his official initiation into the society. Despite being the society's newest member, he is asked to participate in an important mission: helping to retrieve a sacred box containing a valuable secret. The initial attempt fails, however, and Sai Yuk is the only one to survive. The society's leaders accuse him of cowardice and incompetence, but, thanks to the intervention of Sai Yuk's equally tough mother, he is given a chance to redeem himself. This time, however, he is to woo the daughter of the powerful governor who holds the box -- an idea which obviously will not please his fiancee Ting Ting. While the farcical elements are not quite as well-handled as in its predecessor, Fong Sai Yuk 2 does match the original by delivering a number of spectacularly choreographed fighting sequences. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Leung Po-chi directs and Sammo Hung produces this grim horror flick about a school field trip gone horribly horribly wrong. Mr. Cheung (John Sham Kin-fun) takes a half-dozen high school students for a two-day outing on a remote island. Soon after they are dropped off, they realize that the supposedly deserted island is inhabited by three raving hillbillies and their paranoid mother. Though the two parties at first fashion an uneasy truce of sorts, mayhem ensues when one of the loonies decides to make a captive of one of Mr. Cheung's female students, for breeding purposes. With no way off the island and their boat not scheduled to return for two days, Mr. Cheung and his charges are forced to hunker down and defend themselves. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
