In this adventure drama, four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots within an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop; Corvin went on to become an aerospace engineer, Hawkins continued on as a freelance pilot, O'Neill became an astrophysicist with a sideline in designing roller coasters, and Sullivan took up preaching as a Baptist minister. Years later, a Russian satellite's guidance system has started to malfunction, and it is expected to crash into the Earth within a matter of weeks. The system is identical to the one Corvin designed for Skylab, so NASA head Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) asks Corvin to help him with the emergency mission to repair the satellite. Corvin agrees under one condition -- that he be sent up to do the repairs himself, with Hawkins, O'Neill, and Sullivan as his crew. Clint Eastwood directed Space Cowboys while also starring as Frank Corvin; his supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Courtney B. A group of renegades who hold the fate of the world in their hands meet their match in an army of one in this action thriller. Matt Hendricks (Dolph Lundgren) is a Special Forces officer with the United States Marines whose significant other, Dr. Lynda Christian (Meilani Paul), is a scientist specializing in virus research. Lynda, on a high security assignment with the government, is travelling from Russia to the United States via a U.S. Navy submarine; she and Matt have had a serious argument, and in hopes of patching things up, Matt arranges to come back to America on the same sub. However, their romantic problems soon take a back seat to more pressing concerns. Lynda is helping to escort a cache of Agent Red back to the States; Agent Red is a powerful biological weapon, with no known antidote, that could kill the population of a major city in a matter of hours. Word of the deadly cargo has leaked out to a group of fanatical Russian terrorists, who have ambushed the sub and stolen the powerful virus. The terrorists have threatened to release Agent Red in New York and Moscow via the sub's missile system if their demands aren't met, and Matt becomes the world's last defense against destruction as he takes on the invaders. This imaginative, well-photographed tale is really a series of Russian folk legends strung together by overlapping characters. The first vignette has to do with the marriage of a country bumpkin to a peasant woman. His ignorance about what it means to consummate a marriage causes the frustrated woman to lock him out of the house, so he hits the road. In his travels, he befriends a resourceful soldier and the two of them come across an inventor whose burning desire is to create a machine that will fly. In this melodrama, Masha (Natalia Anreischenko) is a research lab worker who throws her husband out of the house when she discovers he has a mistress. Her friends encourage her to attend parties in order to be sociable and to perhaps meet a new man. She goes home with a taxi driver, but she leaves suddenly when his wife returns unexpectedly. There are comic touches to this feature, but viewers should be warned of a brutal gang-rape scene. After her adventures, Masha considers reconciling with her wayward husband when he vows to give up his mistress. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
