Despite its allegedly having US co-producers, this late Soviet-era documentary gives every evidence of being a standard Cold War propaganda piece. Despite its creative interpretations of the historical record, it could be of considerable interest to history buffs and World War II buffs, as it contains a great deal of never-before seen archival footage which was finally made available due to the advent of glasnost. Ranging over a large period of time but sustaining a focus on the development and proliferation of the atom bomb, one of the highlights of the documentary is it's presentation of one side's view of the Klaus Fuchs (atom bomb) spy case. If you've ever wanted to see one of the propaganda pieces which claim that the Soviets did nearly everything first or did it better, this is a film you must see. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this melodrama, Masha (Natalia Anreischenko) is a research lab worker who throws her husband out of the house when she discovers he has a mistress. Her friends encourage her to attend parties in order to be sociable and to perhaps meet a new man. She goes home with a taxi driver, but she leaves suddenly when his wife returns unexpectedly. There are comic touches to this feature, but viewers should be warned of a brutal gang-rape scene. A marriage of convenience that turns into a marriage of two people in love is the focus of this melodrama set during World War II. The story begins in Central Asia where Igor (Igor Kostolevsky) has been sent, along with his theatrical troupe, to entertain and distract people and soldiers from the larger war. Olga (Natalia Belokhvostikova) is working as a nurse in the local clinic and awakens the sympathy of Igor once he learns that she is suffering from malaria. The two strike up a friendship, then Igor finds out that married couples are allowed back into Moscow. In order to help cure Olga's malarial attacks, Igor talks her into a marriage of convenience, and she reluctantly agrees, thereby setting the stage for the possibility of their impending romance to begin. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This story starts in 1980 in Paris as the memories of Andrei Borodin (Igor Kostolevsky), a Soviet agent, take the action back to 1943 during the Teheran meetings of Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill. A high-ranking Nazi intelligence officer (Albert Filozov) developed a plan to assassinate the three world leaders in order to undermine the Allied forces. He commissioned a German agent Max Richard (Armen Dzhigarkhanyan) to carry out his plan, but it failed due to the quick action and thinking of Andrei. While in Teheran, Andrei met a Russian woman (Natalia Belokhvostikova) living in the city and they had a brief but intense affair. Nearly four decades later, the Nazi officer has been captured - but not for long. Freed by terrorists, the officer is hunting down the German agent who failed to carry out the planned assassinations. In the meantime, the Soviet agent is in Paris to meet his lover from years ago, and modern terrorists pose threats that seem to have been carried across the decades. Alain Delon briefly appears as the ill-fated police inspector who must hunt down the terrorists. Teheran '43 won a Gold Medal at the 1981 Moscow Film Festival. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Popular Russian actor Mikhail Kozakov directed this romantic comedy set in a small provincial town where the main cultural attraction is a glimpse of a fast train going by. One day, something extraordinary happens, as the train stops and a worldly, elegant woman from a big city steps off. That woman, Mona (Anastasiya Vertinskaya), has no ticket, and the station master insists that she must buy one. She has no money, and there are no trains until tomorrow, so she ends up staying at the house of local schoolteacher Marin Miroiu (Igor Kostolevsky). Miroiu, who teaches astronomy, claims to have discovered a previously unknown star. At first, Mona dislikes the bookish schoolteacher, but gradually the two fall in love. Their idyll is interrupted by the arrival of Mona's wealthy lover (Mikhail Kozakov), who wants to take her back to city life. ~ Yuri German, All Movie Guide
