The "cobweb" in this jarring and creatively-filmed story is the environment that traps a normal young woman into drug addiction and makes her suffer through the prescribed cure as well. Radka (Eva Kulichova) lives at home with her neurotic, distant mother. One day, Radka is drugged by one of her mother's boyfriends and either seduced or raped, depending on one's perspective. Once she becomes addicted to drugs, it eventually leads her to a treatment center that's more like a prison than a hospital or clinic. Psychiatrists listen to Radka's stories about her past life with all the sympathy of Himmler or Goebbels listening to a Jew. Radka, in fact, invents an idyllic romance with a Swede as a part of "divulging" her past to the stony-faced therapists. Zdenek (Vladimir Javoprsky) is a gangly, rural and homely hayseed who studies music. When he takes a summer job as a mailman, he quickly becomes the object of affection for several willing females. One tells Zdenek she is pregnant and later runs off after abandoning the baby on his doorstep. He ends up caring for the infant despite learning that he is not the father. Although the feature is a comedy, it is hard to find humor in an abandoned baby, the plight of an emotionally troubled unmarried mother, and a suicide. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

The Goslings of this film's title refers to the young girls working in a textile factory, with the storyline focusing on Marie (Yvetta Kornova), an orphan who learns about adulthood through her relationships at work and at the youth hostel where she lives. Coming from an unhappy childhood, the 16-year-old Marie observes with wide eyes the way other young women at the factory handle the advances of persistent older men and how rivalry over love interests can tear apart friendships. The downside of life is not the only side, however. Marie gets to stay with a normal, caring family for a weekend, and she contrasts that environment with the lives she has observed outside the bounds of family and home. Her experiences continue to broaden her view of life, as the "gosling" starts to lose the baby down and grow feathers that will help her to fly on her own. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
