Set in a sprawling old house at the turn of the 20th century, this drama by Vijaya Mehta was adapted from a screenplay that she also directed. Rao Saheb is the master of a large household, and he has fairly revolutionary ideas for his era. He likes many things Western, including Mozart's music, and he occasionally lapses into English. Normally his eccentricities would be taken in stride, but when he starts to treat the wife of one of his workers as an equal to the men around her, people are scandalized and react accordingly. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

When Piroji fails to act on an offer of marriage, his best friend Pesi marries the beautiful but masochistic Jerro in this drama with touches of gentle comedy. Piroji first meets the troubled bride at the wedding and falls in love. He vows to become her protector and turns his back on Pesi when he gets involved with another woman. The film gives an accurate glimpse into the Parsi community of Bombay in the 1930s. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Two brothers take different paths in life, which leads both of them into danger in this drama from India. Kishan (Jackie Shroff) and Karan (Anil Kapoor) are two brothers who move to Bombay to find their fortunes. Kishan falls in with Anna (Nana Patekar), a drug dealer; Karan becomes friends with a policeman (Anupam Kher), falls in love with schoolteacher Paru (Madhuri Dixit), and decides to go to America to further his education. As Kishan sinks deeper into the criminal underworld, Anna discovers the policeman Karan used to know has been assigned to bring him to justice. Anna intends to kill the cop rather than lose control of his criminal empire, and Kishan learns of Anna's deadly plan just as Karan is about to return home. Kishan is determined to keep his brother away from himself and the policeman to protect his safety, but Karan isn't so sure he wants to be sent away to Delhi, since he hopes to renew his relationship with Paru. Like many "Bollywood" dramas, Parinda also features several songs. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Director Subhash Ghai also dreamed up the story of the Indian Ram Lakhan. Raakhee plays a widowed mother who lives for revenge. She raises her sons Ram (Jacki Shroff) and Lakhan (Anil Kapoor) with hatred in their hearts. It is her wish that her sons avenge the murder of their father. To that end, both boys become police officers, though one is far more committed to honesty than the other. Like most Indian films, Ram Lakhan is something of an endurance test for western audiences, unfolding its simple tale in an epic 186 minutes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Shakti Kapoor has the "bad guy" part -- and, by default, the most interesting role -- in the Indian production Taaqatwar. Kapoor plays a crooked builder who murders municipal officer Anupam Kher when the latter refuses to take a bribe. Schoolteacher Anil Dhawan is framed for the killing, and duly hanged. Years later, Dhawan's son Govinda, a petty thief, and Kher's son Sanjay Dutt, a police official, team up to square accounts with Kapoor. Taaqatwar runs 148 minutes, which for an Indian production is virtually a short subject. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Indian Main Tera Dushman stars Jackie Shroff as a forest ranger. The ranger's mission of the moment is to track down and capture a gang of poachers, led by Anupam Kher. Slowing down the ranger's progress is the fact that police inspector Kiran Kumar is in Kher's pocket. With the help of his wife Jaya Prada, his son Rakesh Bedi, and a cooperative elephant, Shroff is able to see that justice is done. For reasons best known to Indian audiences, who seem to enjoy spending the entire day at the movies, the minimalist Main Tera Dushman clocks in at 165 minutes! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
