Satish Kaushik Movies

A native of Delhi, India, and a graduate of Kirori Mal College, Satish Kaushik enjoyed frequent Bollywood acting roles interspersed with occasional directing assignments. He first bowed onscreen as an actor with Shekhar Kapur's 1983 Masoom, then followed it up with similar parts in such features as Kundan Shah's Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983) and Dayal Nihalani's Guru Dakshina (1986), before making his entrée into directing in the adult-themed romantic comedy-drama Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993), and subsequently alternating between work before the camera and behind it. Later directorial credits included the 1999 Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, the 2005 Vaada, and the 2006 Shaadi Se Pehle; while subsequent acting highlights included Wajahh: A Reason to Kill (2004) and Umar (2006). In 2007, Kaushik signed for a starring role as the husband in an arranged marriage in director Sarah Gavron's drama Brick Lane. Though not primarily a scribe, Kaushik did author the script for the 2006 Shaadi Se Pehle. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Director Sarah Gavron and screenwriter Abi Morgan team to adapt author Monica Ali's award-winning novel about a young girl from Bangladesh who finds the spark in her soul slowly fading after traveling to London for an arranged marriage. As a child, Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee) was always told that she was a survivor. Now, as a young adult, she must contend with the sudden death of her mother. Her father arranges her marriage to a man she has never met, and she gets shuttled off from her quaint village to a working-class neighborhood in East London, as the bride of Chanu (Satish Kaushik), where she earns extra income via sewing. At first, the newlywed Nazneen does her best to be a devoted wife and loving mother. It's a lonely life, and as the pompous ineffectual Chanu does his best to fit into British society, the bored housewife finds herself increasingly drawn to Karim (Christopher Simpson), the hotheaded fellow who delivers pants to her door for various sewing jobs. The two lapse into an impassioned affair, but Chanu grows increasingly determined to marry Nazreen himself, especially as his own politics become more and more radical in the wake of 9/11. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A man tries to bring a modern view of marriage to old India in this musical romance. Vijay (Anil Kapoor) is a successful businessman who, after a long stay in the United States, comes home to India to oversee his family's business affairs. His father Vishwanath (Anupam Kher) thinks it's time Vijay settled down, and attempts to arrange a marriage between his son and Megha (Kajol), the pretty daughter of a middle-class family. Vijay objects to the notion of arranged marriages, and agrees only under one condition -- that if he is not happy with Magha after one year, he is free to walk away. Megha grudgingly agrees to the arrangement, and soon comes to enjoy marriage with Vijay, especially since he accords her a degree of independence more common in the west than in India. However, after twelve months, Megha thinks all is going well, and hopes to start a family with her husband when Vijay announces he intends to leave her under the terms of their agreement. Angry, Megha leaves Vijay, and he soon finds he deeply regrets turning away his bride. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
