Albert Hughes and his brother Allen Hughes followed their striking debut Menace II Society with this ambitious look at the social and political lives of the African-American community in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Anthony Curtis (Larenz Tate) is a young man coming of age in the Bronx in 1968. Working two part-time jobs -- one as a milkman's helper and another for local numbers runner Kirby (Keith David) -- Anthony is torn between doing the right thing and trying to get by in a environment that offers few opportunities to young black men. After graduating from high school, Anthony decides to join the Marines, news that is not well-received by his parents, who want him to go to college, or his girlfriend Juanita (Rose Jackson), with whom Anthony recently lost his virginity. After serving a horrific tour of duty in Viet Nam with his friends Skip (Chris Tucker) and Jose (Freddy Rodriguez), Anthony finds himself back home in 1973, where Juanita has been raising the child he fathered before he shipped out, drugs and crime have crippled his community, and honest job prospects are practically nil. Eventually, Anthony falls in with Kirby, Skip, and Jose, who have teamed with Juanita's sister Delilah (N'Bushe Wright), a Black Power activist, and Cleon (Bokeem Woodbine), in a scheme to rob an armored truck taking worn greenbacks ("dead presidents") to a mint to be destroyed. Hill Harper makes his first series appearance as Aaron, a recent Polk High graduate who goes to work for his idol, Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill). Rising to the occasion, Al imparts some words of wisdom to his admiring disciple--among them "Don't get married." Meanwhile, Kelly (Christina Applegate), still working for a bug-spray concern as "The Verminator", is sprayed with a new pesticide called "RU Dead 42"--with astonishing results. This episode takes place just after the devastating LA riots of 1992. Philip (James Avery) and Vivian (Janet Hubert-Whitten) return to their old neighborhood to spearhead a clean-up effort, prompting a flashback to the couple's early years and their aspirations for the future (offering a glimpse of Philip in a 'fro'!) Meanwhile, Will (Will Smith) runs up against an embittered ghetto dweller (Shavar Ross) who attacks him for forgetting his homeboy roots. The life of legendary scientist Albert Einstein is re-imagined as a slapstick farce in this comic fantasy. Changing Einstein's country of origin from Germany to Tasmania, the film shows the scientist's eventful youth as he creates rock & roll and discovers the secret of splitting the beer atom. Director and star Yahoo Serious loads the film with slapstick comedy, absurd sight gags, and even sneaks in a romantic subplot in which Einstein courts Marie Curie. The film was a huge hit in its native Australia but a major box-office disappointment in the United States, where audiences largely ignored the display of nonstop silliness. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide
