Two men learn firsthand about the cruel twists of fame and fortune in a drama from Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. In the early '80s, Tony Pisapia (Toni Servillo) and his younger brother, Antonio (Andrea Renzi), have each risen to the peak of their chosen professions. Tony is a nightclub singer who after years of struggle has achieved nationwide fame, and Antonio is a soccer player who becomes a star after scoring the game-winning goal in the European championship match. However, a few years down the line both men are experiencing a sharp reversal of their good fortune. Tony has developed a devastating cocaine addiction, and after it's revealed he's become sexually involved with an underage girl, it doesn't seem likely that the public will ever forgive him. Meanwhile, a leg injury has put an end to Antonio's career as an athlete, and he finds himself starting from zero as he tries to launch a new career in coaching; he faces another personal crisis when his wife, frustrated by Antonio's career decline, leaves him. L'Uomo in Piu was loosely based on the true stories of two Italian celebrities, musician Franco Califano and football star Agostino Di Bartolomei. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This gentle Italian children's drama is set in 1943 and tells the true tale of Mathilde, a 13-year-old girl who meets Italy's King just before the US Army invaded Rome. During that fateful summer Mathilde and Beatrice, her mother, head out to the country estate of her grandfather, the Count. Though Mathilde's father, a sailor, died many years before, she has never fully accepted this and hopes he will come back. The Count's home is a flurry of activity as the whole house prepares for the wedding of Maria, a very pregnant maid, and Tonio; unfortunately, the wedding is abruptly canceled when Italy's royal leaders and what's left of the government show up. All of them are fleeing the country, abandoning their own people, before the Germans take over completely. To protect the servants, the Count has them all locked in the attic, forcing Mathilde and Beatrice to act as hostesses. Beatrice finds renewed love with one of the entourage, the handsome Major Ferri, the man who could be Mathilde's real father. Mathilde doesn't know this and the thought of this man with her mother is torture. Later, she speaks with the cowardly King who proves to be more of a tragic figure than one worthy of contempt. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The Neapolitan Mafia is one of the players in this comedy thriller about how one man in particular manages to scrape up some cash in Naples at the expense of organized crime. Salvatore (Giancarlo Giannini) sets up shop in a local hospital each day to help patients and visitors find their way around. On one of his normal days, a woman named Lucella Picone (Lina Sastri) asks him to find out if her husband is in the hospital morgue -- he burnt himself to death in court to protest the abominable working conditions at his factory. Suspecting that there is something strange in this request, Salvatore cribs Picone's journal and soon deciphers the ciphers -- she is actually an "insurance" collector for the mob. Deciding to take a little advantage of his good fortune, Salvatore starts making the rounds for Picone, letting everyone know that "Picone sent me." Even he knows his good fortune cannot last forever and it does not take long for Picone to catch on to his scheme -- but how can she retrieve her journal and stop him? ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

As he is cooling his heels, his wife is having an affair, and being a "modern" woman she has no qualms about telling Gianni. When he gets out of prison, being a tradition-bound male yet in love with his wife, he does everything he can to "win" her back from his new rival, the erstwhile lover. While working on this problem, Gianni is developing some others when he steals a company truck in an effort to get out of a scam operation and obtain some more job security -- not the best solution, although it is sure to get his demand for job security some attention. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The wages of heroin on body, mind, and spirit are compassionately portrayed in this drama by Massimo Pirri. Without hammering out a message or moralizing, Pirri shows his protagonists facing the daily challenge of obtaining a fix at any cost. Marco (Helmut Berger) used to be a school teacher, but now he and his lover Pina (Corinne Clery) live in a junkyard in an abandoned bus. Gangsters and other violent lowlifes show up now and again to make their life even more of a living hell. On a typical day, the pair go to Marco's pusher's house, and while he shoots up in one room Pina may be providing sexual favors in another for cash or drugs. There is nothing too base or dangerous to do if it will provide another fix. The duo will hook children on drugs, sell out friends, and even steal from each other as death patiently waits in the wings for its cue. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This entertaining, light comedy is carried on the shoulders of Nino Manfredi, who plays a gypsy coffee vendor illegally selling expresso on trains. Inventive, creative, and needing to stay several steps ahead of the conductors and other bureaucrats out to shut down his operation, the cafe artist often finds himself hiding out in the most unusual places. He needs the money because his young, asthmatic son needs medical attention. That fact casts no shadow on the comedy though, as the coffee vendor continues to dodge his pursuers toward what must surely be an upbeat ending for all concerned. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
